Hi, I've been fighting with this for the last 8 days and have finally given up on fixing this myself. I am in the process of converting our office from Windows 2000 to SuSE Linux 8.0. I have 1 major obstacle still in the way and have decided to post this to the mailing list. Sorry this post is so long, but this is kind of an elusive problem. (Probably a really simple problem - I hope). I have SuSE 8.0 Professional running on 2 workstations (my own and a test box) and both have the same issue. I'm guessing its server related. We run SuSE 7.3 on the server and have been having problems connecting with NFS and NIS. During boot the system will not find the NIS server and will time out trying to connect to the NFS shares. It seems that it will connect find after I log in as root and then log out (going to INIT 5 by default with KDE). It will give the error when logging in to an alternate console of (Sorry, didn't write exact error, but is a common one) - YP_DOMAIN_BIND FAILED or something like that --the error when logging in with a NIS client when the server isn't up. I can ping the server and get internet access (NAT) and can even SSH in to the server, but I can't mount any NFS mounts or connect to NIS until I wait an undetermined amount of time (After I start and am looking at the graphical login with no users listed, I hit ctrl-alt-backspace every few minutes until I see the list (sometimes right away, sometimes after 10 mins (or it seems like 10 mins). Eventually it will finally connect to NFS without a problem and also nis...I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace at the graphical log on and then see all the users listed. The biggest problem is that I have to maunally mount the /home share and /shares share after it gets its connection. I think this is related to the portmapper, not NFS or NIS, but am baffled..I've updated everything I could find from YOU and this problem exists on a brand new installation of SuSE 8.0, so it would appear to be a server problem, but then after it connects, its a perfectly normal connection. Below are errors and such. Thanks in advance for any help. (Sorrry again for such a long post). Jason Pfingstmann, CNA Systems Administrator Serendipity Telepresence, Inc. Try the troubleshooting section of the NFS howto: http://nfs.sourceforge.net/ There's also a NIS howto: http://www.linux-nis.org/

Don't confuse fs_freq and fs_passno with uid and gid. See man fstab. But that is not related to your main problem.
