Lost Volume Control with SB LIVE!
I have installed and fully updated SuSE 8.1 on a new hard drive, but I am having the same problem now as I had with 8.0 after the latest round of updates. NO volume control. I can move the volume bar up and down all I want but no effect. Has anyone else had this problem? -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16! Yes. The solution is simple: go to the "start" icon (the first one on the taskbar) and select Multimedia/Sound/Mixer and when you click on Mixer the volume control will reappear on the taskbar. -- Don't resent getting old. A great many are denied that privelege.

I can't believe I am the only one with this problem!?!? I have noticed that in YaST2 I can adjust the volume by using the WaveSurrond volume controls. But the "Master" and "PCL" have absolutely NO effect on the volume. I have an SBLIVE! here at home and also at work, and the problem is the same. I am really in need of some help here. As it appears that the only way to draw attention is by ranting about how Linux stinks in some way. I don't want to do that. If this is a driver problem or a config file problem or an ignorant user problem (most likely) I just need to know. -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16! Hmmm I have the same sound card, and do not have the same problem in 8.1. YaST2 reports it a SBLive! Player 5.1, and is using the EMU10K1 driver setup as the SB Live!/PCI512/E-mu APS model. I use KMix docked to Kicker as a master volume control - which works fine... and I can also control volume in the apps I use (MPlayer, XMMS etc). So.... I don't think it is a problem with SuSE8.1. More like a local config problem. Have you tried removing and reinstalling the soundcard driver? I can't think of anything else off the top of my head... unless you want to fie up your favorite text editor and go hunting through config files to find the problem. C.

I have a SoundBlaster Live! Platinum with the LiveDrive. I have use Kmix just fine. I suggest you install "alsamixergui" and try it. You probably already have the console based "alsamixer" installed. Please don't bother with that! Enough, already.

Not the greatest help, perhaps, but I use an SB Live value, which uses the emu101k driver. It has worked fine with the default install in SuSE 7.3, 8.0, 8.1. Any help at this point would be great help. And, Yes Kmix, or for that matter, any mixer, even alsamixer, and alsamixergui. It shows up as: "CT4850 SBLive! Value" in YaST2. I used to have it working on this machine, but then for some reason after a late round of updates while running 8.0 it stopped. Then I installed a new hard drive and installed a fresh copy of 8.1 and it still didn't work. I have an upgraded 8.1 (from 8.0) that is running the same sound card that has the same problem. -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16! ALSA is just about to that point with me. I am about fed up with this crap. and I'm not getting any younger.

AS I said before yes. What I need is someone with a fully functional SB Live! Value card to send me a copy of the following files: /etc/asound.state /etc/rc.d/alsasound /etc/alsa.d/emu10k1 the section of /etc/modules.conf that deals with sound. I think I have found the problem. The asound.state has the master control being at position: control.39 and control.40 While the mixer apparently thinks that the master volume control is at control.2. Even alsamixer swaps the two around. I just need verification and some kind of collaboration to determine what caused it and how to fix it. Because I can adjust the "Wave Surround Volume" and my volume globally goes up and down. The reason I know I can't be the only one having this issue is because I have two machines with the same sound card, and a plain, don't adjust anything install on one resulted in the same, change all configs to suite, install on the other. I may have gotten a bad batch of cd's and might need to install all the ALSA rpms from the ftp site to straighten it out. -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16!
