Hello, A sneaking supcicion is growing on me that one of my IDE disks is getting tired of life. Is there a non-destructive disk exerciser program that can be be run across the whole of the physical disk somewhere in the world. If it is going to break I would rather it happened now than later..it is pretty new so getting it replaced under guarantee won't be a problem. It is an IBM Deskstar 60 GXP-40GB. Thanks. -- Regards Cliff

Check with the company that makes your HD. Many have test programs on thier web/FTP sites. Nick
i tried this command and it tells me that count is not a valid option.

A sneaking supcicion is growing on me that one of my IDE disks is getting tired of life.
I was on Freshmeat the other night, and I saw a tool to enable the SMART tools on ATA disks...I'll look for that again; perhaps it's even in the SuSE distribution.
It is an IBM Deskstar 60 GXP-40GB.
Isn't there a problem that's been noted with the 75GXPs? Does this not afflict the 60GXPs as well? I'm pretty glad I didn't invest in a 75GXP back when I had the money. :) ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The 75GXP is the best IDE drive I every purchased; most popular drive back in
2000 too. You can download a DOS utility at:

Ooh, neat. :) Isn't that DOS, though? ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was mistaken; I've a Deskstar 34GXP (7,200RPM ATA66)
Ooh, neat. :) Isn't that DOS, though?
That's what I said! Is this any better?

Ah. I'm happy for you, then. :) The 75GXP was so popular this year and last because it was the fastest (with Windows) ATA drive available. Now if only "High-Performance" and "Reliable" weren't mutually exclusive terms...
Ooh, neat. :) Isn't that DOS, though?

Pointe. My mistake. Sorry about that. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
