[SLE] Help with SuSE updates and more
My 64-bit laptop is still running SuSE 9.3 taht i had installed at the actory about 6 months ago. I haven't had the guts to update for fear to clash with unknown non-standard h/w components. Andre Truter, whose name probably sounds familiar as he's a pretty active Linux registered engineer, has chacked my laptop h/d inventory and reassured me that its components (wire and wireless network cards, etc.) are known to SuSE database. ... still I'm shaking ... I need to start using Qt and COIN for building a 3-D GUI. Andre has suggested me to upgrade my O.S. to 10.0 first and then to 10.1 and use KDevelop to develop my GUI. I do hope the integration between Qt and COIN is starightforwatd. I know Qt comes with SuSE DVDs but I do not think COIN has ever been part of SuSE distro. I have used KDEVELOP in the past for some C++ s/w development (I think with SuSE 8.0) and know KDevelop has been changed a lot since then. So it'll be a lot of pain just to get started. Unluckily I work under a lot of pressure and have tons of things to do (just started my postdoc ...) Andre has been assisting me since I had my first SuSE 7.3 installed on my desktop. Of course he's constantly helping me. But given my present situation (i'm no more a student) he suggested me to get in contact with a local Linux SuSE group for assistance with the upgrading and set-ups. I've just joined the FermiLab and live in Aurora IL. I wonder if some nearby SuSE expert is amenable to help me through the above mentioned tasks. Actually I've contacted the local CompUSA, Best Buy, Circui City stores looking for SuSE Pro 10.0 and 10.1. Surprisingly they do not carry it. I've always got all new SuSE version at CompUSA in St.Louis MO as well as in Knoxville TN ... I've strte to downl;oad SuSE 10.0 but it's going to take forever ... I do not think thsi is the way to go for me. Where can find the familiar SuSE green box (I hope they haven't change its color in the meantime ) ? Thank you in advance for your assistance. I can't speak for laptops, but I've not had issues with 9.3 or 10.0. Then again, it depends on what you have installed...

Strange, our (DE) CompUSA has had all of them. Can't say for the others. I'm not a fan of BB or CC. Amazon sells 10.1 for $54 - free shipping. Novel should also have it on their site. Amazon also has 10.0. Personally (and I think many on the list would agree) I would go with 10.0 for now. Remember, there is no "pro" now. The version you download isn't the same as what you can buy. Some stuff is missing.

You could have someone burn you a set of disks and send them to you... Don't you have any place you can go to down load for free? A local community college? A Library? I know of salesman that need to check their email when on the road and they drive into any neighborhood and just grab anyone's wireless they can find. I've found wireless in business parks. I've already been alerted that the gcc compiler coming with 10.0 cannot compile the CERN library that to me is vital.

do you mean neither 10.0 nor 10.1 are issued as a professional distro ?

I know that. Thsa's why I prefer to get the green professional box. That's what I've been doing so far

Here at FNAL they have adopted Red Hat. I've just been here for 6 weeks.I do not know anyone close to me who is running SuSE.
Don't you have any place you can go to down load for free? A local community college? A Library? Sure. I have started the downloading process of 10.0 at the lab. It'll take forever. I also have 6.0 Mbs DSL at home but I'd like to avoid long (maybe over a week) downloading.

WTF? If it takes more than a few hours to download the whole thing, you are getting ripped off for your connection or you have other issues. Start the download, go make and eat dinner, come back and it's all done. Only upgrade if one or more of the following is true: 1) You need some function offered in the new software (kernel). 2) You are unsatisfied with the function or performance of the current setup. 3) Track record shows the new version is more stable than the old. Reasons to stay with what you know: 1) Everything is working just fine. 2) You are satisfied with the current setup. My laptop is an IBM Thinkpad R30 (five 1/2 years old) running RedHat 7.2 Enigma. Am I going to upgrade it *ever* ? Nope. Its running great, and I'm gonna use it till it drops... then I'm gonna worry about which laptop supports both Suse 10.x and Ubuntu. :-) -- Kind regards, Mark H. Just a quick comment on 10.0 and 10.1 In the past, SuSE has been available as a pro edition that comes in 2 forms,

the full boxed set (SuSE Pro), and the upgrade (The upgrade contains all
the media - CDs and DVD, and only 1 book). SuSE 10.1 only comes in one
flavor which is equivalent to the Pro Upgrade versions in the past.
Both should run fine on your system. Please note that the DVD media in both
10.0 and 10.1 contains more than the set of CDs.
