I was dual booting with Windows XP and Linux and I had to use "fixmbr" to re-write the master boot record because, I guess Grub got messed up because it wouldn't boot. Is there anyway to save my installed Linux because now I just have the regular Windows XP boot without an option for LInux?
Hello Aaron: If memory serves, it seems to me that SuSE 9.1 offers a recovery feature. To restore Grub, I began a normal install (BIOS set to boot from the CD) and, at some point during the install, you have the option to repair or install Grub. I think that's how it worked but it's been awhile since I had to do this. Hope this helps. Cheers, Mike On Monday 01 November 2004 21:39, Aaron Bridge wrote:

When booting the install CD/dvd's, there is an option on the first screen for 'rescue system'. Select this option. It will take you to a login. Login as root. (no pswd needed) mount /dev/??? /mnt (whatever device your / is) cd /mnt chroot /mnt mount /dev/??? /boot (whatever your /boot device is) run yast to reload the boot loader.

~ guess you can boot from SuSE CD and then ---> install ---> Boot Installed System [ just enter the partition that has root / ] Next, start YAST & re-run Grub [ or Lilo ] { if you are frightened about 'rocking the boat' , you can tell YAST to put Grub of /dev/fd0 floppy disk } best rgds _________

Boot from the install disks. You should be able to run the existing install, where you can use Yast to reinstall Grub.
