Hi What would be a good replacement for Sendmail? I have linux-router with fetchmail / sendmail running, and both win and Linux "clients" on LAN-side. There is ADSL-line out from it. Fetchmail-side is working nicely. Now I have found Sendmail to be really out-of-date what comes to configuration. I can't get it to work, it just gives "realying denied" no matter what I try. I have been able to set it so, that every domain-name I manually code into the configuration is accepted, but surely there must be some "*" somewhere, but it just won't work, and docs are of no use. So it is out-of-date piece of SW. So, I need to replace it with a modern package. Jaska.

"Every domain"? How many domains do you have exactly? Using a wildcard like * is a sure guarantee that noone will receive mail from you at all, since you'd be blacklisted as an open relay (haven for spammers). //Anders
Postfix in on the SuSE CDs. I like it. It is a bunch of small,
modular programs written to be secure and not lose mail. Most of the
configuration files are fairly readable, e.g.:
myhostname = austinblues.dyndns.org
mydomain = austinblues.dyndns.org
mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, elendil.$mydomain,
austinblues.dyndns.org
relay_domains = $mydestination
There is a book by Richard Blum that is helpful, but not much good
with advanced questions. THe docs and mailing list are also helpful.
Qmail is also a bunch of small, modular programs written to be secure
and not lose mail. It is fairly easy to download the tarball, build
and install it.
If you are not comfortable doing this, think real hard about whether
you really need to run your own mail system. E-mail is one of the
more complex systems. I have several hundred hours in my mail system.
I am a software engineer with 25+ years of experience, 20 years of
Unix user experience, and three years of Linux experience (not
bragging, just giving you a reference point).
I setup Postfix about a week before my ISP botched an e-mail server
upgrade. Their e-mail was out of server for several days and
regurgitating old mail for a week. Almost all of my mail was routed
around them. Lucky timing. Made all the work worthwhile.

There are a number of MTAs. A lot of people seem to like Exim and Qmail as alternatives at present; but I've never tried them.
Now I have found Sendmail to be really out-of-date what comes to configuration. I can't get it to work, it just gives "realying denied" no matter what I try.
Sendmail can do almost anything, but it is very difficult to configure. If you want to use sendmail, O'Reily (who publish a lot of excellent Linux and Unix books) publishes a large book on sendmail known as the "bat book" from the bat on the cover.
actually, sendmail when configured correctly works fine, so being "out of
date" I would suspect is not
the cause of the problem you are experiencing. Postfix and QMail are two
popular alternatives and if
you check linuxburg, you will find others. I'll caution you however, that
improperly configured rely
settings will generate the same results with these programs as well....just
a thought...

but it just won't work, and docs are of no use. You have not read the docs.
So it is out-of-date piece of SW. You won't get very far with that attitude.
So, I need to replace it with a modern package. No package does lightly, what you want do do.
Find out why your mail upsets everyone !! Regards Dan
->>So it is out-of-date piece of SW. ->You won't get very far with that attitude. Hmm...this "out-of-date" pkg moves about 3 million emails a day through the servers I'm an admin on. I would agree..read the docs..ask specific questions and get O'Reilly's Sendmail book. The one with the bat on the cover. Then we can talk...because these other MTA's are no more "modern" then sendmail is..and anyone who says they are is wrong. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Sounds more like user error. You want to relay * Please post your IP after
you do that so we can all use your ADSL to bounce spam, we just bought a
mailing list of 10,000 names we need to spam and your assistance would be
greatly appreciated.
You can use Postfix, better for novice users that cannot read/understand the
manual.

I have a Kensington webcam recognized as /dev/video0 and supported under 7.3 with the se401 module. how do I now get images from it? ie it's sitting on my server, and I want it to a) stream video b)grab a still whenever the scene changes I've seen plenty of Mac OS and Windows apps that do this, and a couple on freshmeat that are supposed to, but I wanted to see if anyone had good or bad experiences with any particular product. Thanks. -mab --
Download webmin or something if you are not familiar with the docs. Sendmail
documentation is very thorough and runs very efficiently when configured
properly.
Make sure that you add your allowable domains in your sendmail.local file.
Also, if you keep getting mail relaying denied it could be because dns
lookups are not providing a valid relay domain response on the dns lookup.
