Intermittent DNS lookup problems Suse 7.2
I'm using SuSE 7.2. My server runs 24/7 with no problems. I'm running a mail server, squid proxy, network backup, Samba server etc. All runs smoothly. However, after few days I seem to lose the ability to do DNS lookups. I am using my ISP's DNS servers and am not running my own. My Windows client machines can all do them OK so I know my ISPs servers are OK and that my Internet connection (cable modem) is OK. Also I know that my Linux server can access the internet perfectly if I use IP addresses. It just can't resolve IPs using DNS. They only way round this problem seems to be a reboot at which point everything runs OK again for a few days (anywhere from 10 - 21 days). Can anyone give me some ideas as to what may be going wrong or at least how I can get DNS working again when it does go wrong without having to reboot. I can post any files which may help one of you to diagnose the problem if requested. Cheers, Sean Akers. ----- Sean Akers: sean@akers-online.co.uk

Since you said you use a cable modem, I would assume you use a dhcp client. I don't know about dhcpcd, but I believe if you use the ISC dhclient, you can do rcdhclient restart (I think it works for either, but I never had 7.2). If your firewall stops the client, restart your firewall as well. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
