linux modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting sonypi
I'm getting this error in the log file on a regular basis -- linux modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting sonypi(lib/modules/2.6.11.4-29.9-default/kernel/drivers/char/sonypi.k0): No such device Well, I don't have any sony devices, so I can understand why it would say that. Not sure why my system is trying to use a sony module when I don't have a sony device. I did a modprobe -R on sonypi.so, but that didn't seem to fix it. I'm not noticing any impact from this, but I'd just as soon get rid of that message if possible. It makes me a bit uncomfortable to be continually getting FATAL errors written to my log file. Makes me think it could rise up and bite me somewhere down the line. I did some web surfing for "Error inserting sonypi" and found multiple hits. One person was talking about modifying modprobe.conf to remove the references to it to get rid of the message. He seemed to be saying that that was the solution. In my modprobe.conf, I have two entries referencing sonypi (though not sonypi.so). They are alias char-major-10-250 sonypi options sonypi minor=250 Should I comment out these two lines? Is it really that simple? Thanks, Greg Wallace

Probably it then will start complaining about a missing "char-major-10-250" module - if all this is caused by the kernel's auto module loading feature. But there's nothing wrong with just trying it out... But I have no idea what can cause this as c-10-250 is reserved for "private use" (see kernel/Documentation/devices.txt). You didn't tell us anything about your hardware - you're pretty sure there's no PI made by sony in your computer? It probably isn't if it's not a notebook, though... -hwh

Thanks for the input. As far as my hardware, I'm running a desktop Dell Optiplex GX260 with a Samsung CD read write / DVD reader device. The monitor is also a Dell. That's all of the devices I have (other than the floppy, which I think it's safe to say isn't a Sony). I do have a couple of USB hard drive devices, but they're definitely not Sony. What the heck. I'm going to try commenting out those Sony refernces in modprobe.conf and see what happens. Hopefully it won't screw things up in some significant way (Such as causing KDE not to start up, forcing me into console mode. I'm not too fond of vi. What can I say?). Greg Wallace

I don't know the why this message is appearing, but to stop it you can just add the module to /etc/hotplug/blacklist (edit this file as root with a text editor). -- /Paul "It's not about the ending, it's about the journey." - Lex Luthor

Thanks for the info. I hadn't done anything on this yet and don't plan to until tomorrow, so I hadn't tried modifying the modprobe.conf file yet. I'll try your suggestion of adding it to the blacklist first. Seems to be a cleaner approach than commenting out lines in modprobe.conf (in that you're specifying a specific override in a file that is set up for specifying overrides). Thanks, Greg Wallace

Thanks, Greg Wallace I'm also getting the same error and I have a sony 52x-32x-52x CDRW. I cannot

Well, I decided to just comment out the two sonypi lines in modprobe.conf. That got rid of the error message and didn't cause any new error messages to print out, so maybe that's resolved it. I decided to take this approach, instead of using the blacklist, because I figure, this way, if modprobe.conf ever gets corrected, I'll automatically get a new modprobe.conf file, my patch will go away, and I'll have a cleaner install at that point. If the error comes back with a later patch, I can just comment those lines out again. It's not really causing me any problems, just putting that error message in the log every time I boot up. So, if the problem comes back, I can just fix it whenever I happen to see it. Greg Wallace
