Ok so you can ping the cards address and you can ping the loopback but when you try and ping the gateway address, there is no answer. Hmmmm... let us look at the info below.
# ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:90:96:29:AB:A0 inet addr:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Bcast:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Mask:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX inet6 addr: fe80::290:96ff:fe29:aba0/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:0 (0.0 Kb) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:05 Base address:0x9800 Memory:e9000000-e9020000
This is a good sign! It shows that the interface is definitely up and has a address.
# route -n Kernel IP routing table Shows exatly the same as the laptop that works.
Hmmmm.... Ok if you say so. I understand that you must not reveal the specifics of the network but I will have to take your word on it.
# /etc/resolv.conf bash: /etc/resolv.conf: denied
You need to do a less on the resolv.conf to see it. I am assuming you are trying to look at this file as root? This is strange becuase I can see it as a normal user and root. Though I have SuSE 8.2 right now. The resolv.conf file is only used for address resolution. If you cannot ping the gateway, then you have either the netmask set wrong or a duplicate set of IP information on the network. If your laptop is up at the same time as the desktop, then it will not work. You will need to change the IP address of the desktop in order for it to work. As far as SSH goes, it might be related to this. Especially if there are two machines with the same network info up at the same time. Does the error message come up every time that the desktop comes up? Try the above and see if you get any further. -- Marshall There are only one machine at a time. Only got one cable. but here is whats in my resolv.conf ----- domain local nameserver 212.181.54.2 nameserver 212.181.54.2 ----- That's it. //Andy

Ok that answers one of my quesions. How are you connecting to the internet? Is it Cable, DSL, etc? If you are using Cable or DSL, I would try and reset the modem and then try again. Some modems register the network cards MAC address and if a different MAC address then appears, then it can cause problems. Resetting the modem can help reset it so that it will get the MAC address of the current network card and register it. This should help you get it to work. We need to get you to successfully ping the gateway before we can begin to analyze the resolv.config file. If the addresses listed here is of some DNS server either on the network or that your ISP provides, you should be OK once we get you going. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the answers to make the impossible, possible."

Hmmmmm......This is a bit unusual. You get the same address that you do in Windows and on your laptop but the desktop will not ping the gateway. I do not want to doubt you but are you sure that everything IP wise is the same as the laptop including the subnet mask? When you print out the routing table, does it show your gateway in there? I'm starting to run out of ideas here :( Is there anyone on the list that would like to take a crack at this? It looks like I am starting to hit a brick wall here as far as ideas to fix this is concerned. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the answers to make the impossible, possible."

I have two on mother board NIC. I just found out that the one i'm using now is the intel 10/100M. Sense i would like to keep that one for home netwok, i'm thinking of trying to re install using the other nvidia 10M card. If i do a reeinstall do i have to un install first or just format the hds and put on top throug yast?

If you want to change network cards, all you need to do is power down and install the NIC card. Then boot back up. Login and use Yast to either install the NIC card beside your current NIC or you can install the new one and remove the other one. You have a choice! I would NOT reinstall SuSE! That is not necessary at this time. You can do what you need to do in Yast without a reinstall. Now if all else fails, then we could try and reinstall SuSE but this should be a last resort! Give this a try and let us know what happens! -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the answers to make the impossible, possible."

You are trying to _execute_ the file, and it is not a script, nor is it marked as executable. Question: you won't have both computers conected at the same time? if both have the same configuration, there is a conflict. If that is not the case, and you have some kind of router or network interface, remember to power it off when you switch from one computer to the other. You are setting two computers with different ethernet address, but the same ip address. This is confusing to hardware and software. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
