[opensuse] Leap 42.1. After update, black KDE screen
Can anyone confirm this bug? https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=968889 After applying latest updates (2016-03-01), KDE does not start properly anymore, it's just a black screen after login. I even tried reinstalling the whole machine and applying updates, then creating a new user. It's reproducible. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I cannot confirm this myself, but there are posts on the FB page, in the forums referring to the same bug. -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a. It's reproducible. Remember, Leap is the pinnacle example of stability...yeah right! Windows doesn't do things like this, neither should openSUSE. It seems a regular pattern with Plasma 5; something gets fixed and another thing breaks. When Plasma 5 gets stable in 3 years then they'll release Plasma 6 and we start all over again. How can I recommend Leap to *anyone* when my repuation is on the line with bugs such as this? Not impressed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Simple: I recommend any other DE than KDE4 and Plasma 5. Both are instable at best. Plasma 5 gets a "pre-alpha" from me. XFCE and LXDE are more than just OK, they are very fine. GNOME 3 is a matter of taste, but stable (at least within 3.16 or 3.18) There are also others to chose from (Mate/TWM/....). Resumé: Do not equivialize the poor quality of Plasma5 code with the whole openSUSE Leap distro. A clear case of "What goes in, comes out". (open)SUSE is in no way responsible for the quality of Plasma5 code, that is upstream, and KDE is since the intro of version 4 on slide downwards in terms of code quality. Make this very clear to any that what to install and use any Linux distro. That way, you have warned them. Compare Plasma 5 to a Emergency tire for a car, never assume the full performance if you use that. - Yamaban.

- Yamaban. If it's upstreams fault, why wasn't it tested before it was released? We had working systems before the update, and not working systems after the update. That's not an acceptable excuse. Unfortunately since KDE is the default DE for openSUSE and has been for many years, people think of KDE normally when they think of openSUSE. I think the default DE should be GNOME 3 in openSUSE even though I don't like GNOME at all, but at least it's stable. Meaning you can get work done, and not spend your day filing bug reports on kde.org that never get answered. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It seems it wasn't KDE's fault, but some required update that wasn't published because whatever reason, some technical glitch. Supposedly it's ok now, I'll confirm in 30 min. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not yet ready, but you can fix your system with this, if you applied the updates: zypper in -f libKF5KDELibs4Support5-5.16.0-3.6 libKF5XmlGui5-5.16.0-3.1 libQt5Gui5-5.5.1-4.1 Login will work again -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It's fixed now, here's a copy paste from bugzilla Andreas Stieger 2016-03-01 15:08:39 UTC The missing packages are now available in the update repository, the issue is resolved now. The cause for this issue was that two update incidents were built in parallel, one libqt5 security update and another recommended KDE Frameworks update depending on it. This is not normal practice but was chosen in this case to achieve proper separation between security and non-security updates. https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-updates/2016-03/msg00000.html https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-updates/2016-03/msg00001.html This set of updates was tested internally together without issues, and it was known that they depend on each other. However contrary to plan the KDE Frameworks update was released first, and due to lack of explicit version dependency was also installable, resulting in the observed breakage of the binaries. In addition, the release of the missing libqt5 updates was slightly delayed due to a build service problem which was quickly resolved. Our apologies to the affected users and thanks to those verifying the corrections. Users finding themselves still in need of the update please do the following: * Press CTRL-ALT-F2 * log in as root * run "zypper patch" * reboot (or rcxdm restart) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
