Need to back up some files. Whats the simplest standard way of backing up and compressing files across several floppys ?
There are several ways: Tar does have multi-volume capabilities (option -M), but IIRC they cannot be used with gzipped archives.
I was often getting around this problem by `tar'-ing twice: tar cf ARCHIVE.tar.gz DIRECTORY... tar cffM /dev/fd{0,1} ARCHIVE.tar.gz The first `tar' was producing the compressed archive on disk, the second `tar' was putting floppies, alternating between my two floppy drives (going a bit faster by avoiding the waits). Of course, with a single drive, just write the second `tar' as: tar cfM /dev/fd0 ARCHIVE.tar.gz For long term storage, however, I advise against compressed archives on multiple floppies, as if you loose one floppy (get parity errors or such), you loose everything after it. With uncompressed archives, the damage is more limited. I had plans for per-file compression in `tar' (and various other things :-), and hope Paul Eggert will pursue them.
