The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder
From time to time Kmail on my Suse 9.3, KDE 3.5 frustrates me with the following information: Sending failed: Connection to host smtp.indo.net.id is broken. The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. The following transport protocol was used: Bonet direct What I really like to know what to do the next time this message pops up. And what is the cause: connection broken or a broken address which is quiet different. I expect a clearer answer from Linux. This not Windows.

I have had the same issue as well, on Suse 10, KDE 3.5. That generally happens at the same time that Kinternet displays an icon reporting a broken connection. Even when the connection is back (and Kmail can download mail), output email still stays in the output box. I also noticed several kio_smtp processes running. The only solution I have found is to reboot. Then the pending messages are correctly sent. regards Emmanuel

You might try downloading mail first. This has worked for me in the past, when that happens. And do make sure it's a legal email address. -- Bob Rea mailto:gapetard@stsams.org http://www.petard.us http://www.petard.us/blog http://www.petard.us/gallery Freedom is only privilege extended unless enjoyed by one and all --Billy Bragg

The address is legal, since the email is properly sent after the reboot. I do not need to download the mail first in general (this depends on your smtp server configuration, some require a download-before-smtp indeed, but this is my companie's server, and we use SSL authentication instead). I have noted that the problem occurs more often when the wifi card of my laptop is active in the BIOS (even though I am connected through a cable while at the office). At such times, kio_smtp seems to block. In fact, running the "ip link show eth1" command on the machine also blocks forever. killing kio_smtp doesn't solve the problem, although it is properly respawned by kmail. I have waited for several hours in the past, and the messages were not sent. I haven't tried yet clicking on them and do a "send" again, but will try that in future when it happens again (which is, fortunately, rare). thanks Emmanuel

Have you tried double-clicking on the message in your outbox to open it and then clicking 'Send' again? Also, don't confuse a legitimate server busy problem with an error at your end. Your KMail settings don't normally change on their own, so you should expect it to work the same way every time you run it. What happens if you just forget about the problem for a couple of hours? Does it clear itself up (or have you not tried this?)
I also noticed several kio_smtp processes running. The only solution I have found is to reboot.
If you can see the processes running, that is the first step to learning how to kill them individually. Before we get into that, though, how long are you waiting before <shudder> rebooting? Are you certain those processes won't eventually just time out? - Carl

Hi ..
Whenever i get that message from Kmail it has always been down to a problem with the out going address in the Email you are trying to send correct that and away it goes ..
Thanks all for your input. Until now I have been always able to get the emails out but sometimes I have to move the message from outbox to draft and back. Addresses up to now always okay. No changes necessary. Before I send my original email with the problem a message was stuck. I was reminded that that message and the email to the list both would stay in the outbox. Moved the first email to the draft box and the list message flew away. Put the offending email back and it moved after five minutes to an addressee which is a regular recipient. What I do not like that the fault is thought to be at my side when I agree with some of you that it may an ISP connection problem. I have ADSL 24 hour connection by the way.

Did you try: File -> Send queued messages? I from time to time have this problem but with KDE 3.4.2b and Kmail 1.8.2 when my ISP is busy or my local network is busy, might be worth a try. Mike

Mike, that is my favorite key. Does not do anything of importance to get the email away ;(

Constant, I am using SuSE 9.3 and KDE 3.4, and I get the same message only referencing my outbound mail ISP which is BellSouth. My error message always has some ridiculous reason for the rejection. For example it will say the "hard disk is full." Huh? BellSouth's hard disk is full? What the heck??? :o( Anyway, all you have to do to fix things is go to the outbox folder, bring up the message, and send it again. In most cases that will fix the problem (which really did not exist in the first place) and your message will be sent successfully. On occasion I have had the error message appear a few times before the e-mail was sent successfully, but in the vast majority of cases 1 retry did it. I find this very annoying but, fortunately, it does not happen a lot. It certainly seems to be a problem at BellSouth, not something in K-Mail or SuSE. Hope this helps. Gil
