SuSe 9.0 and ulb-gnome here. All working well bar two things: First, nothing happens when I press the logout button. Sometimes, a logout box appears some minutes later. But I've usually lost patience by then. Is there a fix? Second, does "gnomesu" work OK? Can't get it working here but I'm probably doing something wrong. :) Fish

I've never been able to reproduce this problem on any box, sorry...

Works fine for me off the GNOME menu (try selecting SuSE Configuration Tool) (gnomesu isn't provided by a ULB package, so I have no control over that... :) ) -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0). I always have problems logging off gnome - using 8.2 and SuSE packages only. Not the same as described by Mark, but very similar: When I select log-out from the menu, I get the the dialog box; I click, and wait, and wait, and wait... nothing, it can be many long minutes. The panels do not respond, however, non-gnome applications continue working and responding. Often I exit with ctrl-alt-backspace. Then I remembered that I have some xterms opened on another workspace. If I switch to that workspace using the keyboard (it is impossible clicking with the mouse on the Workspace Switcher on the panel), as soon as those xterms display then gnome logs off. Some months earlier, I did not have those xterms on the 3rd workspace, but I had (and still have) some on the first workspace - I could not log off till I clicked on one xterm. For some reason it seems as if gnome needs the xterms to have the focus to be able to close/kill them and log off. Perhaps it is trying to kill them well mannered - and when they refuse, it has to kill them forcibly. Just a wild guess :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I too am experiencing the long delay of logging out of gnome.

Googling so far suggests that this problem is quite widespread and not confined to SuSE or ulb-gnome. I'll post again if I find a fix or likely cause. A suspect at the moment is some kind of conflict with kde if that's also loaded (I have both installed) and X system permissions, but that's just a guess. :) Fish

Thanks for a response. I have a gnome only install with ximian loaded and get the same slow log-out response on that version. Nev

Well, a big difference here after some faffling is this: The file /opt/gnome/share/themes/Smooth-EyeCandy/gtk/gtkrc has this: engine "smooth" { GtkCheckButton::indicator_size = 13 GtkRadioButton::indicator_size = 12 GtkRange::trough_border = 2 GtkRange::slider_width = 15 GtkRange::stepper_size = 15 GtkRange::stepper_spacing = 0 My home dir .xsession-errors log is telling me that it should have a closing brace thus: engine "smooth" { GtkCheckButton::indicator_size = 13 GtkRadioButton::indicator_size = 12 GtkRange::trough_border = 2 GtkRange::slider_width = 15 GtkRange::stepper_size = 15 GtkRange::stepper_spacing = 0 } BUT I have this code in two places. One is the default installed place, i.e. /opt/gnome/share/themes/Smooth-EyeCandy/gtk/gtkrc. And the other is in my home directory as .gtkrc-2.0. I can't recall now, but I did do some cutting and pasteing with themes and .gtkrc-xx files in order to try to get standard eyecandy for gtk apps between gnome and kde. So perhaps this bug only appears if you've got a home .gtkrc-2.0 file set up for this purpose. I'm not trying to suggest a brace has been left out by mistake by the developer. I wouldn't know. Adding the brace to my home .gtkrc-2.0 file appears to have solved the logout problem. For now, anyway. This leaves the pesky gnomesu issue for me. :) Fish

My problem with gnome ximian installed was slightly different although it exhibited the same slow logout symptom (about 1.5-2 minutes). I experienced the problem as both root and user and it occured when I selected log-out from the 'system' menu on the gnome panel. However as a last resort I added a new log-out applet to the gnome panel and the log-out operated normally (quickly). The strangest thing though was that after installing the additional log-out applet and running it, the actual log-out selection from the 'system' menu in the gnome panel that had previously given me problems, started working correctly. I have no answers but I'm glad to have a functioning gnome logout. Thanks for your help and support. Nev

Well that's very useful to know and I'll try it later. My fix about the theme only lasted until I logged out and then in again sometime later. Then back to square one. So it wasn't quite so simple. The Yast2 applet button isn't working either so maybe I'll replace that one too. :) FIsh

I have never gotten gnome to work correctly. Given that I'm stupid I now use KDE. Hoyt
