Hi all, I'm getting ready to upgrade a 6.2 box to 6.3 and have a few questions. This is more of a "what do I have to do to prepare the box, besides backup" type message. As you might guess, I've never upgraded before. First, how does the upgrade treat software that I don't want "upgraded" ; e.g., the 2.2.14 kernel and source tree, as well as programs that I've built from tarballs that are newer than what come with 6.3. Second, with programs that aren't necessary to get the distro up and running-- X, compilers, & so forth, would I be better off to back up the config files and uninstall them, or will the upgrade (generally) deal with them correctly? Finally, are there any programs that I should *definitely* uninstall before the upgrade? You get the chance to deselect things. It will search the machine [the rpm database I guess] to find version numbers. If those numbers are lower then what you've installed it will add them to the list of things to be updated. Just look at all the packages and decide if you really want it to upgrade. I guess the correct thing would be to somehow update the rpm database but I've never gotten up the ambition.

IMHO 6.3 created a ton of backup config files. OTOH always backup nontrivial backup files.

I don't think so. Like I said you can always override what the install program wants to install. The install program still thinks I've got a DHCP client that came with 6.0.
