Hello SuSE folks, Could somebody tell me please where I can get proper modutils for new 2.6.0-xx kernels? I need to generate /etc/modprobe.conf file, but generate-modprobe.conf script is not included with my current modutils-2.4.26-1 package. Many thanks in advance, Alex

I'm surprised, it is in the 2.4.25 package in directory /sbin Anyway you can find it at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kraxel Catimimi.

I was surprised to see that the generate-modprobe.conf script in modutils-2.4.25-50 on the SuSE 9.0 CD1 was exactly the same as the one in the latest module-init-tools. I used it to generate a new /etc/modprobe.conf, but that doesn't work completely, so I've modded the one that is part of aaa_base-9.0-6 to include alsa and my 8139too module, but I have yet to test it out. OK, I've rebooted with the modded /etc/modprobe.conf and everything starts except my webcam which is missing from modprobe.conf, but "modprobe ov511" worked and replugging the webcam caused it to be picked up. I also have my CH PRODUCTS Yoke and Pedals working, final thing I need is a modded nVidia 4496 driver so I can get FlightGear Sim back again. Regards Sid. ============================================================================ My /etc/modprobe.conf for anyone who wants it. ------------------------------------------------------ Sid Boyce wrote:

Do you mean that you are able to run alsa as modules ? I never succeed and get unknown symbols error messages, and have to compile alsa in the kernel ! At the 4th line of /var/log/boot.msg I get : no module symbols loaded : kernel modules are not enabled ! Do you have that? if not is it due to kernel.org modutils ? Thanks for help Catimimi.

I am running alsa as modules with 2.6test9. As a matter of fact, I have had a small problem with alsa recognizing the fm port on my AWE64, and have replaced the included .9.7 alsa with .9.8, and last night with the cvs version. Something is wrong. I got my sources and precompiled kernel from pub/people/kraxel (though I have long since blown away the precompiled version).

That sounds to me like the kernel config. Thanks for reply, My .config file is exactly like yours, I tried once again with kraxel kernel with the same result. All modules will load, except alsa !!! Did you check your /var/log/boot.msg file in order to see if you have the same message than me ? I would appreciate if you could do that and send me your full .config file. I don't understand, the alsa entries in modprobe.conf are the same than yours. BUT I use gcc3.3.1 could it be the reason? Thenks for your help. Michel.

I found it very interesting, I compiled ALSA as modules in the kernel, but sound didn't work, snd-cmipci module was bitching about unrecognized options in modprobe.conf. As soon as I commented out the options for snd-cmipci in /etc/modprobe.conf my sound start working like a charm. It looks like snd-cmipci module from the plain 2.6.0-test9 kernel doesn't understand customized options put by SuSE into original /etc/modules.conf file. Go figure... Actually, ALSA changed the option labeling, dropping the snd_ before (i.e. snd_enable is now just enable). It isn't some SUSE thing, it was an ALSA thing, which according to their web site was for consistency with the kernel. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. As far as I concern, if SuSE didn't reflect ALSA changed labeling option in its /etc/modprobe.conf or modules.conf - it's a bug on SuSE's side. Alex -------------------

Actually, ALSA changed the option labeling, dropping the snd_ before
(i.e. snd_enable is now just enable). It isn't some SUSE thing, it was an ALSA thing, which according to their web site was for consistency
with the kernel.

Kernel 2.6.0 is clearly stated as being unsupported! That's why you can neither install nor configure it via YaST2. The 2.6.0 on the CD/DVD is there for the playful who know what they're dealing with and can handle the problems. Those who can't shouldn't blame SUSE for what was never stated as being supported. The next version of SUSE Linux will most probably support kernel 2.6.0. If it's *then* still not working, you would be right in calling it a bug. Philipp

I did compile a www.kernel.org version of 2.6.# and founds that the modules were file.lo and required the latest version of modutils. I might guess the reason 2.6 fails is that depmod/modprobe does deal with file.lo the same as file.o -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org " http://counter.li.org " #279316
The 2.6 modules are all .ko. SuSE 9.0 modutils has been modified to take care of that. Also 9.0 mkinitrd has been altered to strip off the .o or .ko, so it's able to cope with either. /sbin/generate-modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf did not give me a workable modprobe.conf, I had to edit the one that is part of SuSE 9.0 aaa_base-9.0-6 to add a line for my ethernet card.... alias eth0 8193too and cut and paste the alsa stuff from /etc/modules.conf, then all was well.......... alias sound-slot-0 snd-ens1371 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias snd-card-0 snd-ens1371 alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-11 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss Regards Sid. Hello, I am trying to run a debugger called Komodo by ActiveState on SuSE Linux 9.0. I was told that I had to make sure that the inbound socket connections on port 9000 was open because that's the port Komodo actually listens to for a socket connection from the Windows machine. My Linux box is connected to a HUB which goes to my WinXP machine. That server is connected to the Internet via a sattelite connection. Everything else on my SuSE network seems to be working fine. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim
I'm surprised, it is in the 2.4.25 package in directory /sbin Anyway you can find it at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kraxel
Catimimi.
Sorry for the confusion. I wasn't using SuSE customized modutils. I always use plain modutils from kernel.org However, after I installed new modutis-init, everything goes honky dory. Alex
Nice to hear you got it sorted. Are you now using the module-init-tools from kernel.org or the 9.0 modutils package? I didn't try module-init-tools as the 9.0 modutils seemed to be fine and I've in the past had to clear it all out and reinstall the SuSE package in order to be able to boot 2.4 kernels in 8.x. Regards Sid. Alex Daniloff wrote:

Hi Sid, I'm using module-init-tools from: ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/rusty/modules/ However, If you know where to get 9.0 modutils package, please drop me a link. I want to try it as well. Regards, Alex On Thursday 13 November 2003 11:14 am, Sid Boyce wrote:

Looks like SuSE has caught up and modified their modutils package. The SuSE modutils package is on the 9.0 DVD and CD1, however, if module-init-tools work fine, I'd leave it as I've had problems in the past switching back and forth with the .old binaries not being found when booting 2.4 kernels .... inserting modules failed .... insmod.old - no such file type messages. Then the only solution was to remove the binaries from /sbin and reinstall the SuSE modutils - that was under 8.x. Regards Sid. Alex Daniloff wrote:

If it is boot time you get some depmed newer or old time error message which comes after editing /etc/modules.conf - try running "depmod -a" This will correct the timestamp error message. Also try "modprobe \*" and then "lsmod".
Thanks to the person sending the "generate-modprobe.conf" program. That was a new one for me. I guess I should spend sometime looking in /sbin and /usr/sbin . -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org " http://counter.li.org " #279316

Hmmm, is there a " prebuilt" vanilla 2.6 version ? I'd like to play w/ it ,but just dont have time right now to futz w/ compiling my own. Test box is pretty plain a d ordiery box anyway. So there is no screaming need, either.
Is there a particular reason to send messages to the list -AND- also CC
the list in the same message?
