READONLY file system error during boot with Kraxel 2.6 package
HI, I originally thought that the boot trouble with Kernel 2.6.x after installing Kraxel package is due to /etc/mtab corruption. I now think that it is actually more than that. Does anyone using kernel 2.6 experience this problem? The symptom is simple. During the boot process, a lot of errors show up because the system cannot write any log int /var/log or any place. Sometimes (one in four boot tries), it goes without this error. BTW, i am using reiserfs version 2.6 on my single file system /. =============================================== $ cat /etc/fstab /dev/hda5 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 /dev/hda6 swap swap pri=42 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto, user, sync 0 0 $ cat /etc/mtab /dev/hda5 / reiserfs rw 0 0 proc /proc proc rw 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0 automount(pid1971) /net autofs rw,fd=17,pgrp=1971,minproto=2,maxproto=4 0 0 automount(pid1969) /misc autofs rw,fd=17,pgrp=1969,minproto=2,maxproto=4 0 0 $ cat /proc/mounts rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0 /dev/root / reiserfs rw 0 0 proc /proc proc rw 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs rw 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts rw 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0 automount(pid1971) /net autofs rw 0 0 automount(pid1969) /misc autofs rw 0 0 ===================================================== Any help will be greatly appreciated. I think that error comes from the RPM packages under ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kraxel/ rather than the kernel itself. Because old 2.4 kernels failed also after those RPM replacement. Thank you. After two days of journey into kernel-2.6. I got back to 2.4.xx. In my opinion, there is a serious bug in some of the key rpm packages in ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kraxel/.... On my Dell Inspiron 8200, it bit the machine somewhere during the boot, 80 % of the time, the / file system fell into the READONLY mode. That means the second phase of mounting back the / file system failed. That happened so fast that I vaguely notice where it really is happening. No log. Because the machine cannot leave anything in a READONLY file system. I removed all the rpms which I installed to experiment with 2.6. I got back to 2.6.xx safely. It scared me to death because if I did not get the writable file system on boot (20 % chance), I would not be able to return to 2.4.xx at all. Kraxel (I forgot his real name. sorry) please take a note. Thanks Hugh
