Hello All, Question for the experts out there. Whats the difference between the UDMA 66 drives vs ATA 66? I picked up a UDMA 66 for $135(20GB, 2mb buffer, 7200rpm). Has anyone on this list using this type of udma drive. Is the ATA 66 better? Why or why not?
This 66 MB/sec transfer rate is similar with scsi. My purpose for this drive for webhosting small sites using the SuSe 6.3.
Any extra info will be greatly appreciated...
I use a WD 20 gig UDMA66 drive and it works fine. I can get nowhere near 66mb/sec transfers though. About 28 mb is the max.
If you need the 66mb transfers without the processor overhead use scsi.
Not being an expert I will let others answer the remainder of your questions ;-)
That kind of transfer rate is entirely reasonable, since UDMA33 (aka ATA33) controllers and disks usually get ~15mb/sec. To answer the poster's *first* question, UDMA66 and ATA66 are the same technologies, just different names :). -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x121 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Using Avi's fake rpm and run-parts programs I was able to get the corel wpo2000 graphical install program running, and running, and running..... for almost two hours my HD light flickered and the head clicked. Then, my KDE objects started disappearing off my screen. Finally, only the xterm and the Corel window was showing. Then the x-server died and dropped me to the command line. Upon checking I found that for all that activity the only thing that was done was the creation of the corel directory and the installation of a very short setup_log file. It killed my smtp connection, though, so I am sending through sendmail. When you started this thread, I installed a WPO2000 beta I had lying around on my Red Hat 6.1 system (I have very little personal use for these apps, so I hadn't tried it before). It took only about ten minutes from the time I popped the CD in the drive to get a full install. The apps look lovely -- like real X apps. I think those who don't like the way StarOffice takes over the desktop, will like WPO2000 much better. I haven't tried to install WPO2000 on my SuSE 6.1 -- I've been letting you and Corel pioneer the installation. :) Dwight -- Dwight Johnson dwj@aaronsrod.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Jerry, Something is very wrong with your system, maybe leftovers from previous attempts, I don't know. As I said, I managed to install WPO2K on two machines. On my desktop it work beautifully, on may laptop on the other hand, the applications crash (wine crashes I believe). The big difference between the two machines is that I once had wine installed on my laptop while my desktop never had wine installed. Maybe the laptop has some leftover libraries that where not removed when I deleted the older wine version. Avi Jerry Kreps wrote:

Possibly... I had installed Wine several months ago but removed it when I noticed that for the most part it could play Solitair and a few other games but no apps of importance. JLK

Samy, Not that I'm not interested in your experiences with packages such as WPO. I am. I haven't been able to follow this thread. (The)God(s) turned me down on my request for an extra hour in the day. I do see a bit of Corel bashing going on here at SuSE-e. I occasionally bash manufacturers myself. I must say that I have a generally positive feeling about Corel. I always liked WordPerfect. The "reveal codes" makes all the difference. Corel has been into linux for years. They have done a lot for the advancement of Wine. *I* think this is a good thing for the computer inductry/community. Have y'all then your gripes to Corel? I am certain they have a mailing list or news group where you can discuss these things. They would probably be grateful to hear of your problems. I bash one company in particular because I saw an unambiguous malice on their part. That company distorted the viability of many products I like. One of those products is WP. I'm on their side. Hey, if you have a gripe, give them a chance to respond. If they don't, pummel them! Whose bashing Corel? Every msg I've sent to this newsletter was also sent to Corel. There is a difference between bashing and contructive criticism. BTW, I am a Wordperfect fan myself. I have a purchased copy of WP8 setting on my BOX and it is my wp. <snip>

No bashing at all. The only problem I have with Corel is that they did not test their installation program with SuSE 6.3 nor with Caldera... Their tech support does not reply to support messages even though I am entitled to 30 day installation support. Jerry and I sent e-mail messages as well as posted on their news groups. I really like WPO2K and I am happy Corel did that project. Avi "Steven T. Hatton" wrote:
