Hi. I am setting up a Yahoo/SBC DSL Internet connection and it is on a 6 User network. Would it be recommended just to stick with a hub, or would you use a switch or router. Just looking for opinions. Eric

I suggest |-------> Internal Node | INTERNET<====>DSL ROUTER<========> SuSE Firewall (NAT)<======EXISTING HUB -----> Internal Node Or Spring $80 and by a linkysys router that way you dont have to mess with getting PPPoE working on linux. Also those Firewall in abox applications seem a little less suseptable to worm attacks.

Hello Eric; If you use a hub, your ISP will have to send you 6 ipaddress (dynamically) or assign 6 static address. This usually equates to more money to dish out. If you are only paying for one IP address then router is the way to go. Bob

Huh ? Why not use a firewall between the network and the DSL connection
and NAT it - you only use ONE IP address then.... Assuming that you can
get away with masquerading your internal network, and I don't know of
many businesses that can't.

My 2cents worth: I have been using Shorewall firewall setup for about a year now, My internet machine/router/firewall goes into a cable modem to earthlink. I have a small network of 5 machines being masqueraded. On a whim I purchased a Linksys and another router/hub. They worked fine out of the box but were rather vague in how to set up filtering. Shorewall, on the other hand, is simple and easy to use IF YOU HAVE READ THE DOCUMENTATION. Bottom line, I found the Linux box with Shorewall was much easier to administer than the router box.. If you are looking for a quick, easy setup for a router and you dont intend to do much modifications, the cheap router/hub is not a bad way to go. If you really want to have control over what your router does, a linux box and shorewall is tough to beat. I lied at the beginning, this is about 5 cents worth of optnion. And worth every penny.:+) BTW, I took the routers back to Best Buy. Richard

Of course you can do that too. I do not see why you would not be able to get away w/ masquerading. Sorry that my reply was ambiguous. When you mentioned hub I was reading into it that you where just going to use a hub and put them all on the internet, which did not make since to me. Again sorry for not reading carefully. bob
I use a router with firewall built in and 8 ports. Works great. It is a netgear FVS318. Art On Mon, 2002-11-11 at 16:52, Eric Gies wrote:

if you could....get the switch/router, it maintains throughput speeds per port...
