I am a recent Suse convert and am using 7.1. When attempting to install the rpm version of RealPlayer8 I am getting an "unknown architecture" error message ...any thoughts?...I considered trying the non-rpm version but am unfamiliar with the .bin file format so any thoughts in this regard are welcome as well... The .bin file format is no big deal. It's just an executable so you run it as you would any other program from a prompt. However, it didn't seem to install nicely under SuSE 7.0 with lots of things not pointing quite correctly. Also, RealPlayer8 was less stable on SuSE 7.0. I've upgraded to 7.1, but I've been waiting to hear other people's experience before mucking things up by trying to put RealPlayer8 on it. Finally, RealPlayer7 seems to work fine for most programs. I also suffered from this, but it was made clear by somebody at the
Realaudio message board: use option "--ignorearch" when running rpm
('rpm -ivh --ignorearch ...'). Are you installing on AMD?
I installed RP8 on a PIII (no problem) and on an AMD K6-II (--ignorearch
needed).

I got the same thing. Tried -i and -U and -force - nodep and none worked. I think it is because of being compiled for RH, whereas RealPlayer7 wasn't. I reverted back to RealPlayer7. JLK

The keyword is --ignorearch, and neither -force nor -nodep. It does the trick and I can enjoy RealPlayer8. -Kastus
I wouldn't mess with rpms bot built for suse, you never know what those post-intall scripts will do. I install from the executable binary and never had a problem under suse. -- Rafael

It's easy to look into post-install scripts contained within rpm. Midnight commander can be used for browsing, e.g. Nothing is concealed. -Kastus

Yes it is. As I'm treating myself to a prolonged Weekend (1st of May is a holiday, so I just need one extra day to have four days in a row :), I just might find the time to make a SuSE compatible RPM out of it. The only problem I see is making it available, as I guess the license wouldn't allow it. The only problem I have with rp8 is that it seems that the plugin for netscape doesn't work and quite a few sites require it. Seems the only reason for that is that it enables them to force you to use their own web applet that leaves them room for their own ads ......... I don't know if I am missing something here, but the rp8 netscape plugin works fine for me. I used the executable bin file to install rp8. Having selected the plugin option etc. etc. I found that it didn't work. Thinking that I hadn't selected that option I started up rp8 and through the help menu attempted to install the plugin. This time it worked and does work fine. I think I suggested this in response to earlier queries, but I don't think it was taken on board. Hey, maybe my system's unique! :-) Eddie
