Hello again, I use ELM and occasionally I get emails that have strings that look like this =20D =30D etc. What is happening? Is there something I can do about this? Is it a deficiency in ELM? Thanks, Jim

That's usually from some broken MS encoding but there might be an mta between you and the sender that is doing it. -- -ckm
Ok thanks for the information. Does a stock SuSE 8.1 SuSE postfix have a problem? IE can I assume this is not my problem?

No, qmail and postfix are incapable of sending anything but 8-bit clean mail. Sendmail is another story and I don't know about exchange. -- -ckm
Does Evolution handle such characters?
If not I think a stand alone correction program would be best?
I have been thinking of trying to develope such in VB which also exists
in linux.
This is a frequent occurance. though not from this list.

I don't think it's a "broken MS encoding", I suspect it's a "broken Plan 9 encoding", namely UTF-8. It's not really broken either, it's just that not everything handles it correctly To convert, it should be enough to select the proper encoding in your mailer. in KMail, this is "View->Set Encoding".

Towards the end of its life I think elm handled 8-bit mail fine but don't know about utf-8.

I think with elm you'd have to do this by setting LC_TYPE correctly. -- -ckm

Thanks all for the information. I set LC_TYPE to ISO-8859-1 and we will see if this fixes the problem. -Jim-
