**** imagine; all of everything that is or was, can be reduced to an equation less than one inch long ! *** Major Asso Press article in the paper ( photo and all "ABOVE the fold" on the first page of the financial section ! Says many countries are movin to Linux for better "security and safety" named China, Germany, France and others who do NOT want all their countries future and present information at the mercy of Microsoft's business practises , and thier notorious wide open security holes that never seem to get fixed permanantly from one relese to another. At least two of the countries are putting linux on desktop boxen as well. The idea that local programers can configure and distribute programs , kernals etc in a "localisation" move seems to be a factor in some of the movement. The only mention of "free" OS has to do w/ being able to get the source codes and either fix somethng they find that needs fixing , or just make uniform desktops and uniform web access ( this seems to apply more to China than the others, as tehy really want to be able to tightly control news coming into that country. ) If China does go "open source" LInux it will be a major setback for the Redmand "genius" HE put a lot of personal "face time" into wooing the Government there. Apparently the French are citing the fact that Linus Tovalds ( linux's "daddy") is a Finn , as a good reason to move thier countriesbeaucratic offices to Linux, and , of course all the usual reasons for not UG to Microsoft again . One has to wonder if the push to get everyone that has a MS lisence to upgrade or die ( not to mention pay more if you do NOT UG on "our" schedule!) Might not have left a hole in the Redman foot , right about where the bullet went thru.. Sometimes it just isn't good to threaten people, even if you are teh only game in town... Once "they" begin to consider teh "unthinkable" ( that perhaps you aren't doing thens in their "Best interests" no matter what you say ) once it gets considered as a posibility, every time you push this customer to do soemthing they dont want to do, theycome closer to actually makeing hte jump. EAch time they are pushed, tehy do more "investigation" to see if a change is posible.. and sooner or later , it's not only posible , it is actually going to happen as "you" ( MS) apply one bit of pressure too much. One dekstop at a time .. it just could work! -- j afterthought : COFFEE.EXE missing - insert cup and press any key ...

I used to bash Microsoft every chance I got; but after awhile, I came to the realization that this is NOT a "computer technology" issue. It's a "Wall Street" issue, and increasingly a "surveillance issue". A large portion of retirement funds, and stock portfolios are heavily invested in Microsoft. The politicians know this, and they will not let MS stock crash. Furthermore, the government is getting alot of support for "counter-terrorist" surveillance; it's very handy for everyone to be dependent on Microsoft code. The ability to put backdoors in everyone's machines thru "anti-virus" updates, is a very tempting tool to have. It makes it easy to get pgp keys, etc. Check out this link: http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,48648,00.html JUST BE GLAD YOU WERE SMART ENOUGH TO SWITCH TO LINUX.

THIS EXPLAINS IT !!!! I always knew that the backstage crap the DOJ was pulling was about economics, Wall Street, etc... but could never really pin down just what was the major sticking points as to the DOJ's behavioral subplot. Now It makes a little more sense (provding your correct on this - which you may very well be). This explains the wishy-washy behavior about M$ on the hill and in the Justice dept. On one hand these guys hear a fair portion of the public sector scream increasingly about M$/Redmond and their antics. On the otherhand, "everytime" it comes down to laying the smack down in some fashion the momentum of any procedings or action comes to an abrupt fizzle and essentialy adds up to a lot of hot air and wind. Frankly, given the mix of license, contract, security holes, and the new (and frieghtening) set of full 'Nix sockets in XP I think this may very come to a head, especially in light of the current economic climate. I could very well see if M$ stock were to make a slow and steady decline and if it were evident that many share holders were to diversify and their portfolios to cushion any loss that certain powers that be might be inclined to feed this trend. And then maybe we might see some changes in this sector. I do beleive that M$ may very well be helping this event - insofar that they're doing an exceedingly good job of alienating their clientele. In this scenario one might find a way to manipulate Wall Street's forcasting/recommendation to M$ (i.e. recommending that M$ is a hold, rather than a buy) which could start the snowballing. Oh well, one can one hope (or dream as the case may be). Just MHO, Curtis

??? Never heard that reason used here in France. I don't think it makes any difference wether a product is finn or american. May if Linus was french... As for our "bureaucratic offices" using linux, I whish it was true. One can see a slight move toward linux these days, but AFAIK they're only talking about the feasibility of going linux. -- ~adj~ Ces mystères nous dépassent Feignons d'en être l'organisateur...
