I have the same problem. Unable to find a setting that made both yast and mc happy.

This makes mc work for me: type "export LANG=C" before running mc. (but it breaks the display of lines in yast ...)

If you find a setting that works for both I'd like to know...

I had the same problem when I would run mc from within an "aterm" terminal. Returned to "xterm" and problem disappeared. I think it has to with the terminal's interpretation of the current language characterset? I am not sure how to investigate further or fix but; my short term solution was that I found that running 'mc -a' gave me a workable loadup. Hope this helps, Paul.
