To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] Flightgear Date: 09 Jun 2003 14:00:17 +0000 I have just built FlightGear-0.9.6 under SuSE 8.0.
There is a lot of preliminary work to do like ensuring all the SimGear and plip libraries are installed.
Reading the documentation is abolutely essential, but once I got round all of my misreadings, typos, etc the thing compiled nicely and ran OK
If you need any help, I will list the packages that have to be installed.
Hope this helps

Hullo Hans All these packages were on my SuSE 8.0 professional, and all were needed. There was an error in my post; the current version is 0.9.2, not 0.9.6 mesaglut-devel-4.0.1-74 mesa-4.0.1-74 mesaglu-4.0.1-74 mesaglut-4.0.1-74 mesasoft-4.0.1-74 mesa-devel-4.0.1-74 mesaglu-devel-4.0.1-74 The instruction book also mentions: xf86glu xf86glu-devel xf86_glx which are part of xf86-4.2.0-devel. FlightGear-0.9.2 requires plib > 1.6. SuSE 8.0 only provides plib 1.4, so I had to download and compile plib-1.6. Simgear 0.3.3 is also a prerequisite. Both the above packages can be downloaded from www.flightgear.org. If plip has to be compiled, it will not do so unless all the header files from mesa*-devel are present. SimGear will not compile without plip. The compilation of FlightGear is straightforward. There is a comparatively short binary and a massive data library. Normally the binary goes into /usr/local/bin. The data file fgfs-base-0.9.2 has to be unzipped into /usr/local/lib. A directory /usr/local/lib/FlightGear-0.9.2 will be created. Here is the real gotcha: when starting Flightgear, the command line has to be fgfs --fg-root=/usr/local/lib/FlightGear-0.9.2 otherwise it will not start. However if the parameter is placed in the file $HOME/.fgfsrc then fgfs will start the program. Happy flying! Basil Fowler Are you aware that it has been adapted for flying over Mars?
