Synaptic not really doing anything
Hi All I installed apt and synaptic on my SuSE 8.0 system. Apt are working fine, but synaptic does not do any actual installations/removals, etc. It will download the packages and then when it needs to install them, it pops up a progress dialog and freezes up. When I tried to remove stuff with it, it displayed which packages will be removed and when I click 'proceed' the dialog disappears and Synaptic seems to be very happy with the state of things, but the packages are still there. Are there any additional stuff I need to set up or install to make synaptic work? I installed apt, aptlib and synaptic from the apt/extra stuff on the ftp server. Andre, I assume that you're launching synaptic from the kde menu? On zaterdag 8 juni 2002 10:46, Andre Truter wrote:

Try to launch it from the command line, e.g. as follows: xhost +; su -c "DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/sbin/synaptic"; xhost - Does this work better? -- Richard

Nope, I launced it from a root terminal, but in the background, with 'synaptic &'.

Yup, this works. :-) I saw that method on the apt for SuSE web page, but I am much more clever than those guys..... NOT!! (In Afrikaans we have a saying for people like me: "Slim vang sy baas" - meaning that if you think you are the boss of clever, that 'cleverness' will catch up with you and bite you) I suppose synaptic needs to be bound to the terminal is was launched from. Hi Richard, Today Synaptic is up to it's old tricks agian. I have launched it in all possible ways and it won't do an actual rpm remove. Funny. It worked fine yesterday. The only thing that happened is that my box froze again during the night. apt-get still works fine. -- Andre Truter Software Engineer Registered Linux user #185282 ICQ #40935899 AIM: trusoftzaf http://www.trusoft.za.net <-------------------------------------------------> < The box said: Requires Windows 95 or better... > < So I installed Linux > <------------------------------------------------->
