Hi all, Just wondering if anyone is running the new Radeon 9200 card in their machine and how did you get it configured? This card is supported by XFree86 4.3, but not by the presently installed SuSE version that comes with 8.2! I am not sure about trying to compile the files needed from the XFree86 folks either. From what info I was able to find, it didn't look nor sound as simple as the standard ./configure, make, make install process that we do with other source files. Has SuSE updated their 4.3 recently? Who is the keeper of such things for SuSE and might there be something in the "people" files? Any help is welcomed to get this baby working with SuSE. It does come up in VESA mode, but I was unable to get a full kde boot out of it. From what little I have seen so far it appears quite speedy. :o) Pat -- --- KMail v1.5.3-2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
My *guess* is that SuSE 9.0 will support this card. 9.0 Beta testing is currently ongoing. Dee On Fri, 2003-09-05 at 10:27, BandiPat wrote:

Hey Group;
Has anyone tried this card "ATI Redeon 9200 128M AGP 8X" card . It seems that the 9100 has dried up. My concern comes from MS causing headaches for Linux. Features are normally not a problem.
Is it suppoted readily by the different X servers?
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de:0/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/ATI/suse82/fglrx/2.9.13/ You can find the rpm's for the drivers here as well as a README dealing with installing..etc..etc. I'll warn you. I have a 7500 so I've not tried to make these work but I seem to remember someone on this list posting that they work. Excerpt: The driver supports RV250, RV280, R200, RV350, R300, R350 chipsets of ATI. Popular boards using these chipsets are: - ATI Radeon 8500 / 9100 - ATI FireGL 8700 / 8800 - ATI FireGL E1 / E1+ - ATI Radeon 9000 - ATI Radeon 9200 - ATI Radeon 9500 - ATI Radeon 9600 - ATI Radeon 9700 - ATI Radeon 9800 - ATI FireGL Z1 / X1 / X1+ It looks like it should work for you. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro

My Sapphire Ati Radeon 9500 Pro, AGP, 128 MB worked well in 2D, after selecting the Radeon 8500 in Sax2. I tried the 3.2.4-beta of this fglrx driver, but after that, X became unaccessible, and even in console mode things were so heavily broken that I decided to reinstall 8.2. Rather desastrous.... SH

I had downloaded the 3.2.4-beta also, but did not install it. I didn't try the 8500 settings in sax2, but did a few others, which didn't work well. Isn't the 9500 already supported fully in XFree86 4.3 though? I thought I saw it listed there. I ended up getting the 3.2.5 driver rpm from ATI, installed, built the 3D module for Mantel's latest kernel 2.4.21-64 and off I went. Well, I still had to tinker a bit to fine tune things, but overall, it seems ATI corrected some things in their latest. Very nice card (ATI 9200) and 3D is outstanding with it. What sort of errors do you get if you try to load X with the radeon driver? I'm still struggling to get SuSE going on a friend's computer with a "Gigabyte Radeon 9000 Pro II" It moans that there are no screens to be found. I don't know if there is something non standard about this chip - haven't gotten a good answer out of anyone yet. Maybe we have the same problem? This is the only thing keeping me from getting a Radeon 9x00 myself... Hans

Everyone I have spoke too about the ATI Radeon 9000 comments it works directly with XFree86 4.3. The 3rd party boards are somewhat different and you may experience problems with anything other than the ATI binary drivers. I wanted the 9200 though for the improved engine and 128mb ddr ram on the card. It was only $20 higher than the 9000 64mb card. I actually have it working presently with the ATI binary drivers in 2D, but it complained about my k_athlon kernel when building the 3D modules for the kernel. I am thinking about making some symlinks to point to my installed kernel to get that. It's a fast board, no doubt and it wasn't as big a problem as I thought to get working, but I must admit, I would rather have it working with XFree86 4.3 than the ATI drivers. I just found out Radeon now has 'official' drivers for their cards in Linux. Yep, got them earlier today John. Someone on the XFree86 list pointed me to them and they are very nice. ATI seems to have put some work into those things and when you get them kicking, man what a difference. Windows open so fast it hurts your eyes and the 3D programs like Enemy Territory, are the best! Poor old TuxRacer took a hit, but the others I tried worked nicely. Pat -- --- KMail v1.5.3-2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
sorry, don't remember who started this thread so I will put this here. Be careful what manufacturer's 9200 you get as some are hardware modified boards that work ok but... and can even have problems even with Radeon's driver updates, you may need their own manufacturer's version of the updated drivers. Also check what voltages your motherboard want sig's to work at if your going to buy one as there is 0.8 / 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 all available with the 9200 range over different brands and models. This has been found even with windows running. scsijon At 08:58 PM 5/09/2003, John wrote:

For sure watch out for a "TigerDirect.com" 9200 series with 128M DDR mermoey. It is known as a connect3D Readeon 9200 with ATI all over the box. Made in China and has no fan. It has a heat sink covering the chip so it is rather difficult to check the chip information. It is from " www.connect3D.com " and is 4 and 8X. Ours works in VESA only no 3D.
We bought 2 of them only to find out that neither one will work fully. They seem to work in Winblows but fail in Linux so they must be the NEW WinVid devices. ATI better clamp down on this problem or it will be the last ATI card I will ever buy. -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org Info: http://www.knoppix.net
