Can anyone recommend a _inexpensive_ decent sound card? In the past I mainly use SuSE for servers, so it's not been an issue. Now I'm looking to try to use SuSE for a DT box, and coming from the mac end of things, we always had sound. I have looked at: CompUSA brand (hey don't laugh, they have decent NIC cards) Mad Dog Creative Labs Diamond Multimedia Turtle Beach All the cards I see don't list linux... it must matter right? I'm not looking to spend over $75.US and would like to not go over $50. I'm not looking for total 7.1 surround sound, just decent sound. I may not like using suse as a dt and don't want to get in the hole for too much $. I find sites that tell how to configure the cards, but nothing on what brand-make-model they are. Oh, I'm going to be running 10.0. TIA George

Hi George, There are thousands of threads, blog posts, pro tech articles and how-to's online covering sound cards and Linux. Google "SUSE 10.0 sound card" and, when you find something interesting, look it up on eBay or on one of the sites you referenced. Google "SUSE 10.0 sound <your motherboard model number>" to see if any sound related discussions or articles already exist concerning your motherboard. This "existing knowledge base search" strategy can help you develop a short list of sound card options backed by notes detailing real life installations... notes that can definitely save you a great deal of time and trouble in the long run. If you try this strategy without any luck, then please post back the make and model of your motherboard. hth & regards, Carl -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I got this card to work for 31,5 $ http://uk.europe.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=205&product=14257 on a ECS NFORCE3-A, nForce3 250,Socket-754 Motherboard. It seems to be OK soundwise with 7.1 surround no less (But I wouldn't say its hifi) I had to thinker a little though. Read on if applicable: Delete the on-board sound in yast and then edit/configure the audigy card without sound test. And then close yast and open yast again and then edit/configure with sound test. Then it will work. -- Regrads Kenneth Aar

The original Sound Blaster Live runs about $35 these days. In its heyday this card sold for around $100. Linux support is excellent. Some people have complained about choppy audio with the original Emu10k1 in a number of apps. I've continued to recommend Audigy2 cards, which can be had for under $50 as well. -- Bryan J.
