The specifics of the package I'm looking for aren't the point of this query; it could be any package whatsoever. The general question is how you locate a particular build of a package that has been released in the past but is now neither the newest nor the oldest.
Something like this: apt/apt-info> apt show gramps | grep Version Version: 1.0.1-rb1 Version: 1.0.0-rb1 Version: 0.99-rb1 Version: 0.98.0-rb1
OK, so I got the following: pwa@suillus:~> apt show k_athlon | grep Version Version: 2.4.21-166 Version: 2.4.21-144 Now how can I use apt to retrieve (but not install) build 166? I tried "apt-get --help" but that didn't provide enough information. thanks. Paul Abrahams

execute: apt -d install k_athlon The downloaded rpm can be found in: /var/cache/apt/archives Out of interest, why do you only want to download the rpm? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

No luck: suillus:/home/pwa # apt -d install k_athlon Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done k_athlon is already the newest version. You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: Kernel-Win4Lin3: Depends: k_athlon (= 2.4.21-144) but 2.4.21-192 is to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
Out of interest, why do you only want to download the rpm?
A couple of reasons: 1. I'd like to retrieve the package without having to use root privileges, and apt-get seems to want to write to a directory that isn't writable by ordinary users. 2. More important, I may be uninstalling and reinstalling it several times if I run into any problems. Paul Abrahams

Hi Paul, that's because your previous email stated that the most up to version was *166: Version: 2.4.21-166 Version: 2.4.21-144 I therefor suggested the 'apt -d install k_athlon' command. There is a trick to download a specific version, but even in this case that won't help you as the Kernel-Win4Lin3 dependency blocks this. You should download it manually, from: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.0-i386/RPMS.update/ -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Alas, that directory only has the 192 build as far as I can tell. I specifically want the 166 build because that's the one that works with the Win4Lin kernel. Paul Abrahams

I found all my kernel updates via YOU (both rpm and source) in: /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/9.0/rpm/i586/ k_athlon-2.4.21-144.i586.rpm k_athlon-2.4.21-166.i586.rpm k_athlon-2.4.21-192.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.4.21-144.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.4.21-166.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.4.21-192.i586.rpm For what its worth, Stan

That directory is a real treasure trove and I never knew it existed. It has versions that are no longer available on-line, it seems, and I found exactly what I needed there. As it happens, NetTraverse updated to the latest SuSE kernel just yesterday so shortly after installing the elusive build 166 athlon kernel, I reverted to the better build 192 one and installed the bright shiny Netraverse add-ons at the same level.
