I'm not sure if this is good or bad for SuSE and/or users.

Why? Not based on anything other than commenst I read from a local LUG. Fedora is a crippled version of RedHat. Little focus on security updates.

Don't be ridiculous. No Linux distribution can be expected to be taken seriously without very active security measures. Red Hat wants to offload some of the testing and debugging of their distro to the "community." Some of us, i.e. me, figured this out based on the quality of 8.0 and 9, and the way it was heading through their bugzilla database. That's why I switched, and it was always predicated on the thought that I would stick with SuSE until they "pulled a Red Hat." The bottom line is that Fedora will be a useable distro. In fact, it may be something to return to after things settle down, and patches start getting accepted. I am hopeful for it. On the other hand, it's time to start watching SuSE, and see what happens to *their* licensing. As others have said, Debian and Gentoo are two distros I keep my thumb on the pulse of, and I'm ready to go at a moment's notice. SuSE doesn't seem to have much of a presence on this list, but you can bet your boots they'll be lurking to see the fallout from the announcement. Voice your concerns now. Plans may already be in progress to ruin the things we all like about SuSE's position in the field. I have to admit, I like the _possibilities_ of teaming up Ximian and SuSE on the desktop, and NDS on the server... Whether Novell takes proper advantage of these opportunities will be the crux of the issue. Obviously, all we can do is wait and see. Regards, dk

Actually, that's quite untrue. The deal is that that the current released version of Fedora (at a given point in time) will be getting security updates on RH's buck. For all versions prior to that, it will be on a community volunteer basis. Considering how a majority of the home-using public upgrades to the latest versions when they're released, I don't see why it's an issue. --Jerry -- "So remember kids, eat meat. And lots of it. What community? From what I've seen, Fedora will be 100% controlled by RH. Just look at the make-up of the Steering Committee. -- trey

It will be interesting to see if that category of user gets a mention in the press conference. They (we) certainly don't in the press release as far as I could see ... then again, I've no idea what proportion of revenue sales to home users represented to SuSE. But I assume we can expect it to be a very much smaller proportion for Novell.

arg! I just started using Suse 8.2 after years of Debian. Last time I used Suse was 5.?. If all these yucky things come to pass, then I'll be more comfortable than you migrating to Debian! :) But I was just starting to like Suse...

Yes, suddenly I find myself looking at Debian or perhaps Slackware. /Lars
