Hi all, I have a quick question, exactly when does /etc/profile and ~/.profile get executed? Will it happen when I login through a ssh prompt remotely? And if so, is there any way I can stop things from running remotely? Even better, is there a good source online of what files the shell etc executes at startup, login and logout. Tom Wesley

For login shells.
Will it happen when I login through a ssh prompt remotely?
Yes.
And if so, is there any way I can stop things from running remotely?
What things?

The man page for your shell should explain it. -- -ckm
