[SLE] - IPMasq help needed
I finally achieved samba printing, (winbox print to Linux Samba) and now trying to play with IP Masq. I am using my SuSE 6.2 box as router, with IP 192.168.0.5, in the config setting, activated IP-Masq, DHCP and some other, can someone help me on this? which to set ON and which do not set to ON? after playing with it, Netscape can't connect to the net so to email :( I uses a win98 with stat-IP 192.168.0.1 and a notebook with stat-IP 192.168.0.8 trying to connect to the Linux Box, both can see the share printer, able to ping both way (or three way to be exact). I tried both stat IP and DHCP client on the notebook and both the win98 box and the notebook are with gateway pointed to the Linux box (192.168.0.5) in there network setting. The Linux box can ping to the outside world, so where is wrong? connection to internet is through wvdial on 56k modem connection. I read the mini-howto on IP Masq, it say there is a script in /etc/rc.d/ but I can't find it? am I missing this or it's hiding somewhere else? the two scripts, one for the entire TCP/IP range? and one for specific IP addr suggested in the howto confused me. Can someone kindly help me on this, it seems that it's very fun to play with all this but guidance is appreciated. Thank you and regards. Hi Dennis, You say Netscape can't connect. Do you mean Netscape on the Win computers or Linux? To get your Linux box to route packets from the internal network, one of the things you have to do is set IP_FORWARD=yes in /etc/rc.config and then run SuSEconfig. You may or may not have already done this, but lets just see. Of course, if it's Netscape on the Linux box that isn't working then this won't help, and it's probably a DNS problem (although this seems unlikely since you can ping the outside world - are you pinging IP addresses or domain names?). Hope that helps, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Netscape on LinBox can't connect. The IP_Forward=Yes is set. I can ping from the LinBox to the outside world by IP addr. tested again and still ok. I got a neighbour table overflow message when bootup? did I set something wrong?? Thanks Chris, still no luck. Dennis/SG the ping

Considering you only have three machines why not just give them all static IPs? If you do no need for DHCP.

Are you saying the linux box can ping but the clients can't? If so can you ping by IP#? Or by name? Can you ping from the clients 205.188.247.193 [ftp.netscape.com]? Or do you mean you can't ping at all. When you say you activated IP-Masq what do you mean? Did you turn it on in Yast? If so that only applies after the next time you reboot. Go to /etc/rc.d/masquerade and tell it to start. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking so ask again if any of the things I've suggested didn't help. Other things to do. With the windows machine setup the DNS numbers. Make sure /etc/resolv.conf is right on the linux box. It is done, the LinBox (192.168.0.5), the win98 box (192.168.0.1) and the notebook (192.168.0.8) DHCP is set to OFF.

Ping from the LinBox to the outside world is fine, ping to the winbox and notebook are ok (both/three ways) but no go when ping from the winbox or notebook to the outside world. The /etc/rc.d is not right, it appeared as /etc~rc.d? is this normal??

I do a /etc/rd.d/masquerade status and got the message: IP Masquerading entries (nothing, just blank) And I missing some setting and where and what should I do now?

The /etc/resolv.conf is empty? is this the problem?(I think so) Thanks Nick, any 'simple' documentation where I can refer to? This is probably the problem with Netscape on Linux not being able to work. If you are able to run Windows, you need to find out the DNS numbers for your ISP. I'm afraid I don't have any computers running Windows here, so I couldn't tell you exactly whre to find this out under Windows. I don't know whether winipcfg would tell you or not. One thing I should point out. If you get your DNS numbers via DHCP, then if you checked your /etc/resolv.conf while you weren't connnected you may, as you found, not see your DNS numbers. Try checking /etc/resolv.conf again while you are connected. If the numbers still aren't there after making a connection, then do as suggested above and find out your DNS numbers from somewhere, then use YaST to enter them (it should be under Network --> Nameserver or something like that. If you want to find out more about what /etc/resolv.conf is for, then the SuSE manual is a good place to start. In my 6.1 manual, the section about /etc/resolv.conf is on p133. As for the other computers, they may not have their routes set up right. You'll need to go into Windows Control Panel and double-click on Network, select the TCP-IP protocol for the NIC and click properties, then find the section talking about default gateway and give it the (internal) IP address of your Linux box. Of course, this is just one possibility, but it's one I think you should check. Hopefully some part of that will help! Download the firewall package from http://www.suse.de/~marc This is some very nice does it all package from Marc Heuse. Does set up masquerading and packet filter. A one stop solution ;-) BB, Arjen -- Sell what you use, use what you sell. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
...and another suggestion is, install GFCC...
It comes with SuSE 6.3..... Full IN/OUT/PASS-THRU firewall-configuration
package...
Especially good in complex networks...

I set mine up in SuSE. I have stuff I have to do in Redhat. I couldn't get RH firewall to act right. I transfered the three files from my SuSE partition to RedHat and it works perfectly No Worries now. Bill Brennick wrote:

I been there as directed, but my knowledge don't allow me to understand what is happening :( Is there anything 'simpler'? I need to get started first, improvement can be ongoing. Thanks Arjen, no luck still. :( Dennis/SG

Maybe it looks confusing, but it is a very good start. It get's you secure the most quickly. If you have configured your network yourself this shoul be easy. Just enter your network topology and enter yes for the Routed and Masquerading option. I can't check this at the moment, but this get's you pretty far. This sounds like a similiar problem that I had when reformatted my router box to install SuSE 6.3. I had all my configuration files from SuSE 6.1, but I couldn't get the packets moving across the network and out the modem. It turned out that I did not have my network listed in the /etc/networks file: localnet 192.168.0.0 This one line made all the difference.
