[opensuse] How do I get new users to show up on the graphical login screen?
I have family in for several weeks. I want to allow them to use my system at will, and for that, I created accounts for each, using the yast user management process. However, when I logged off my kde session, not only did the new accounts not show up, the old generic guest account disappeared. What do I need to do to get all 7 accounts onto the graphical login screen? Perhaps try restarting kdm, i.e. rckdm restart as root. That is assuming a lot, as you didn't say which DE, what version, etc. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I was hoping there was something quick and obvious, and a bit rushed. Now that it's obvious that I was too naive, and I have some time, here's a rundown. opensuse 11.0, up to date as far as this morning's check says. kde 3.5.9 release 49.1 kde4 installed (original with 11.0 and not updated) but not in use. When I set up the 4 new users this morning, I tried first logging out of my session. When only the first two accounts I had created at installation showed up (guest was third), I tried the Windows solution for everything (reboot). When this didn't help, I sent the message asking for help. I tried-- ctrl-alt-f1, log in as root, rckdm restart --before this message, and there was no change. Still only my and my wife's accounts show. When I go into yast user management, all users show, and I can see no difference in their configurations. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Can you log in as those hidden names? Maybe they have to be listed somewhere to be shown in the greeter (is that the name?). This is new to me. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I've seen this behaviour on 10.2, add the user and it doesn't show up in the log in screen until (the reboot?) after the profile has been logged into. I have two users on my main system that are that way, it was three, but one actually sat down and logged in. /home/<user-not-seen> was carried over from a previous release, and the users with passwords were added back in by me on the current release. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You might try YaST -> System -> /etc/sysconfig Editor Then under 'Display Manager' there are a couple of things to look at. KDM_USERS "space separated list of users for which icons should be shown in KDM if empty, then take system defaults" You might also test changing the DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME to blank, just to see... Yes, by going to a text console I could log in as all users. I tried this, then rckmd restart, and nothing changed. Don Raboud wrote:

KDM_USERS
Progress! I'm up to five users. Curiously, the missing users are in the middle of the string. It didn't select the last five or the first five; it skipped over the third and fourth users in the string.

I made this a separate step, because it said this would set it back to the default theme, which lacked some features. When the previous change only got me up to five users, I tried this, which gave me a screen I don't remember ever seeing before, but which gave me a scrolling list with all my users. So it's all good now, except possibly some missing function. I wonder what features might be missing.
Hope this helps.
It certainly did. Thanks a lot, Don. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've had this same thing with 10.2 I think. I never found a cure, but it was definitely connected with certain users. I used the GUI to define who to show on the login screen. And there I found out that there was 2 users when selected messed the list up. Including them, made some others disappear also. But without those 2, everything was fine. I'm still running that system (with that flaw - fortunately, those users are remote users) and just evaluating whether to upgrade to 11.0 or not. -- HG. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

FWIW, I just used Yast to create a new user and the icon is immediately available at the login panel. This is on 10.3 -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

in the kde control center (admin, connexion, users) you have a kde place where you can define who must be displayed and who don't, and with what image jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The control center on mine does not have such options -- but then it's in a different menu path than what you list. Is this a matter of different versions? opensuse 11.0 (with online updates) kde 3.5.9 "release 49.1" jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
