Proxy fine-tuning [on SUSE 10.0].
Hi, On the privacy analysis of http://privacy.net/ I was surprised a little bit that the proxy I configured for my own network is very well visible and not only its name/port can be read by the destination net- work, but even the _internal_IP_ of the requesting computer: <...> inter.net:8080 (squid/2.5.STABLE10) <...> X-Forwarded-For:192.168.1.13 Would be a way to hide somehow that I run a proxy and imitate that I _do_ run a single computer? (I have dial-up via modem and my provider doesn't care, but I really do.) If I understand well, with fine-tuning of the proxy cache the wished features could be reached, but please, how: As primary aim I would like 1. to hide the originated internal IP as stands now in "X-Forwarded-For:", then 2. to hide the proxy's internal name with the port it's running and 3. not to let it send out the squid name and version info. These three would be the points I would like to have. Thank you in advance, Pelibali

Hi Pelibali I like the following page because it's really well written and provides links to some extremely useful resources: http://linux.cudeso.be/linuxdoc/squid.php: In particular: "... forwarded_for This setting allows you to hide your internal IP when visiting a site. forwarded_for off" and "... 9. Configuration details There's an excellent paper that covers most of the settings in squid.conf. When you want to tailor squid to your needs I advice you to read through this document. You can find it at http://squid.visolve.com/squid24s1/contents.htm." hth & regards, Carl

Hi Pelibali, You're welcome! And if you ever need someone at the other end of the 'line' to chat with while you're doing bandwidth forensics on Skype, I'm happy to volunteer ;-) Drop me a note off-list with a date and time and I'll fire it up. I don't keep it running 24 x 7 but I use it a lot. regards, Carl
