car mp3 player (possibly OT)
Fellow SuSErs, I apologize if this is off-topic, but can't really think of a better place to ask. I am trying to build an mp3 player for my car out of an old ibm thinkpad 600e. the display is shot, but otherwise it works fine, has 192 meg ram and a 30 gig hard drive. i have googled extensively and as far as i can tell i've hit every site even remotely relevant, but still can't find a few answers (or maybe i'm just dense!) i have already done a minimum install of suse 8.1 and added all alsa packages, i'll install other packages as needed. i'd like to have a hand-held controller with an lcd screen, i think i'll use one from Matrix Orbital with a keypad interface. that should plug into the serial port without much else. the output from the soundcard will be sent to an rf modulator that plugs into the car stereo antenna port (it's a compnay car, so i want to be able to easily move it when i get a new one). for now the power will come from an inverter, either hard-wired to the battery or plugged into the cigarette lighter (and i happen to have an inverter laying around.) what i am having trouble comprehending is: what software do i use to interpret the incoming signal at the serial port to actually play a song? what software do i use to send a signal out the serial port to be displayed on the lcd screen? there must be a database in there somewhere to hold all the song info, do i use mysql? again, my apologies if this is off-topic, just didn't know where else to ask. cliff

Take a look at http://www.mp3pump.de/ As far as I know the product is not in production anymore, but you may get some ideas from it... and they did some work on Linux based players. C.

This also may give you some interesting ideas... ;-) http://www.dashpc.com/ If anything, it's the ultimate geek addition to your car. <grin> C.

I ran across this project which may (or may not) be of interest / use to you. MP3 STATION http://freshmeat.net/projects/cm3s/?topic_id=123%2C861 Also there is a suse multimedia list, pretty low volume. suse-multimedia-e@suse.com for list info suse-multimedia-e-help@suse.com Let us know how things turn out. -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!

Maybe it can act as a standard text console with keyboard, even if limited. In that case, it would be set up on /etc/inittab, and you would have the standard text login. Anything else, you'd have to program it yourself, unless somebody else has done it before.
again, my apologies if this is off-topic, just didn't know where else to ask.
Well, you put Suse 8.1 on it, so it is on-topic - sort off :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
My experience with one of the readily available FM modulators is that the frequency is not all that stable. It works OK in the house, after it settles down. With modern cars having crystal- controlled frequencies, this may be a problem. Worse, the one that I have uses an inboard battery, rather than work off the lighter socket. So you will have a replacement battery problem on a frequent basis. There are devices that imitate a cassette, and can be put in the cassette slot, that couple stereo audio to the car radio. I would think that this might be a better way to go. The actual mp3 to analog device is up to you. I merely submit my personal experience. --doug, wa2say At 10:37 03/20/2003 -0500, cliff pankonien wrote:
