Ben, Tell me how you got it to work. I have gone by 2 different howtos specific for my ATI card and I still cant get compiz to do anything other than bring my desktop to its knees. Literally watching each pixel get drawn. This on my Toshiba P35, ATI 9700, 1G of RAM. Do you have a favorite link you will post? I would love to check compiz out. I get the compiz icon in the task bar, I restart the desktop, but nothing.... I seem to have everything installed: [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # rpm -qa | grep compiz compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.5.2_git070824-22 compiz-emerald-0.5.2_git070825-1.4 compiz-fusion-kde-0.5.2-3.1 compiz-emerald-themes-0.5.2_git070825-2.6 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.5.2_git070824-22 compizconfig-settings-manager-0.5.2_git070825-22 compiz-kde-0.5.4-40.2 libcompizconfig-0.5.2_git070824-22 libcompizconfig-backend-gconf-0.5.2_git070824-23 compiz-0.5.4-40.2 libcompizconfig-backend-kconfig-0.5.2_git070825-1.4 compiz-manager-0.0.1_git071011-6.1 python-compizconfig-0.5.2_git070825-22 Though it looks like I'm one version behind. No joy. Same result. After installing 0.6.0, I can get gnome-xgl-switch --enable-xgl to work. I have disabled window translucency, and I have followed both http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz-Fusion, and http://linux.wordpress.com/2007/10/12/opensuse-103-running-compiz-fusion-usi... What happens is that restarting x with "rcxdm restart" bombs dropping you to the console. startx as user kills the mouse light and hard locks the machine. startx as root will get x going, but you could watch grass grow faster than the display works. I would still like to get Compiz working if possible, so any other help would be greatly appreciated. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Done and built from the latest ATI release: [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # rpm -qa | grep fgl ati-fglrxG01-kmp-default-8.41.7_2.6.22.5_30-1.1 x11-video-fglrxG01-8.41.7-5.1

Check if symlink to Xgl is created properly:
ll /usr/bin/X lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Oct 21 23:02 /usr/bin/X -> /usr/bin/Xgl
If it is not created, create it.
Currently it points to: [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # l /usr/bin/X lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2007-10-12 02:38 /usr/bin/X -> /var/X11R6/bin/X* Here is where I think there is a problem. What am I supposed to do with the following link? [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # l /var/X11R6/bin/X lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2007-10-22 01:45 /var/X11R6/bin/X -> /usr/bin/Xorg* Is that the way it is supposed to be? If that is the case, shouldn't I link /usr/bin/Xgl to /var/X11R6/Bin/X? If we link to /usr/bin/Xgl to /usr/bin/X wouldn't that leave the broken link of /usr/bin/Xorg to /var/X11R6/bin/X hangin around that could cause problems? Really confusing link scheme. Your help is appreciated.
Remove any compiz autostart scripts and reboot.
Cheers

Correct, didn't want to confuse with init 3 && lsmod | grep fglrx || modprobe fglrx && init 5 thing. I think I've said the 8.41 drivers may not work for your card, so please check ati website for the correct version and install that with 1-click. rm /usr/bin/X && ln -s /usr/bin/Xgl /usr/binX Hope you get it working -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Total Nightmare! I finally got to original driver re-installed and I can now use x again. With the http://opensuse-community.org/ati-legacy.ymp drivers installed and the /usr/bin/X -> /usr/bin/Xgl link created, x would start and KDE would load with the fusion icon shown in the taskbar, but everything else was a disaster. For starters there was no 3D and the 1/10 frame rate with the old drivers made things crawl. More interesting was the fact that I had NO keyboard in KDE. Thank God the mouse worked to kill the session. Yast from the command line got the ati drivers installed, reinstalling the /usr/bin/X -> /var/X11R6/bin/X* got x straightened out and now glxgears frame rate is back to 2700 and fgl_glxgears frame rate is back to 570. I must be hexed with regard to getting compiz to work. Hell, I can follow directions, but success eludes me. What else could I be screwing up? Why wouldn't the legacy drivers work? I have a great display with the latest 8.41 ati drivers, great 3D and great frame rates. Why won't the 8.41 drivers work with Compiz? What else should I try? Good advise, and thanks for the reply. I'll wait. I setup my desktop box with compiz and it has got to be the slickest desktop I have ever seen. One more question. I have seen a "side-panel" for compiz similar to the vista side panel, but I can't find it in the compiz manager. Do you know what it is called and where I can find it? -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # ll /usr/bin/X lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2007-10-22 18:56 /usr/bin/X -> /usr/bin/Xgl
[root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # rpm -qa | grep fgl ati-fglrxG01-kmp-default-8.40.4_2.6.22.9_0.4-1 x11-video-fglrxG01-8.40.4-1
Bad news,
following the advise to the tee, glx isn't even loaded, the driver is using Mesa? glxinfo:
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 7.0.1) OpenGL extensions:
glxgears frame rate is 1/10 of what it was. fgl_glxgears will not even run:
[root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 159 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent) Serial number of failed request: 33 Current serial number in output stream: 33
Any additional thoughts? I have the ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run, and I'll build the 8.40 drivers from that and try again. The http://opensuse-community.org/ati-legacy.ymp was not the ticket on my Toshiba P35 laptop with the ATI 9700 card.

I do not know about ati, but the nvidia card, I had to enable a bunch of things. Among them is xgl before the card xgl stuf would work. -- Joseph Loo jloo@acm.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Do not run sax2 after installation.
Check if symlink to Xgl is created properly:
ll /usr/bin/X lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Oct 21 23:02 /usr/bin/X -> /usr/bin/Xgl
If it is not created, create it.
Remove any compiz autostart scripts and reboot.
I'm confused - what is the reboot for?
Joe
There is no need to reboot, just restart your xsession. The easiest way is to logout and then login. When you logout "X" is automatically restarted. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So, I am installing Compiz 6.0 (or so it seems) from the XGL Build Service, and wanted to check to see if there was an announcement on compiz.org, and nothing..

Announcements : http://dev.compiz-fusion.org/~cyberorg/2007/10/21/ Above repeated here: http://planet.compiz-fusion.org/ and http://planetsuse.org/ Full official announcements: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/compiz/2007-October/002726.html (Compiz 0.6.2) http://lists.compiz-fusion.org/pipermail/community/2007-October/000142.html (Compiz Fusion 0.6.0) Do give it a thorough testing ;) Have fun! -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
