[SLE] how do I uninstall a .tar program?
I recently installed ssh-2.0.13 it was not a rpm just a standard .tar well a friend told me to only use the openssh because the rest are buggy. so I am getting ready to downoad the open ssh. But Do I need to uninstall the old one first?? kpackage and gnorpm don't even know it exists. and I know where the binary is at. Do I just delete it. and install the new version??? Yeah, that's the problem with ``tarballs''. They virtually never come with uninstall procedures. The problem is in knowing what to delete; it may involve more than just a binary. Ordinarily, Linux programs don't tweak existing files; they just add new ones. But I'm sure there are exceptions. I guess that's one of the things that led to the development of the Redhat Package Manager. Yes, kfm can help with the job, but it doesn't solve the problem of files that are modified by the install script, if there are any. Also, most files in a typical tarball, especially one that requires compilation, are only used during the build/installation process and are not actually installed on the disk.
