[opensuse] Watching videos in openSUSE 12.3
I occasionally watch videos with my computer and use my notebook computer to display on my TV via HDMI. I have noticed two issues. One, the desktop will blank out after a while and I have to press a key to bring it back. The other is when I use HDMI to carry the audio, I have to reconfigure PulseAudio to switch the audio from the internal speakers to Digital Stereo output. On Windows, the screen does not blank when playing a video and the audio is switched automatically to HDMI. Is there any way to configure openSUSE to behave in a similar manner as Windows. The audio switching is a minor inconvenience, but the screen blanking is da*n irritating, especially when watching a show that runs a couple of hours. tnx jk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Disable the screensaver and run "xset -dpms" if disabling the screensaver is not sufficient. Jim -- Jim Henderson Please keep on-topic replies on the list so everyone benefits -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Which DE and player do you use? I have to think at least one or the other is broken that you should have needed to ask your original question. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." KDE on 12.3. I normally watch videos with Firefox, but some with Kaffine. If something is broken, it's on both my desktop and notebook computers. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Which plugin, though? Some media players can be configured to keep the screensaver from kicking in. IIRC, in Firefox the URI "about:plugins" might tell us what plugin is being used. Jim -- Jim Henderson Please keep on-topic replies on the list so everyone benefits -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

My previous question was intended specifically for Firefox - for Kaffine, there's a changelog item that indicates that in version 1.0-pre2, screen saver inhibition was added through dbus. On KDE should be easier if you create a Multimedia Activity, then go to Battery Monitor Settings and on the left side panel go to Activity Settings and choose Multimedia Activity Tab (or whatever you named it). There, Define a special behavior by checking the boxes "Never shutdown the screen" and "Never suspend or shutdown". Apply the changes and OK. Another settings you should check is Display and Monitor->Screen Locker-

+1 All I do is switch to this activity when I am going to watch videos. The problem with the sound device though is how does the OS know which device you want it to play through? Try settings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Playback
Video and select your device. I don't know if this gets saved to an activity but you can test it -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Try settings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Playback
Enter here at your peril. If you have multiple audio devices it will pretty much throw a wobbly. And it's buggy too, because just opening the settings dialog there will be as if you made some changes. Check the preferred device too for each setting -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

So, it would appear there's no way, short of special configurations, to keep the display from blanking when playing a video?

On Windows, it switches when connected via HDMI, nothing has to be configured. Similar already happens on openSUSE, such as when I plug in a USB headset. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That hasn't been determined in this thread. Try standalone players like VLC and/or SMplayer to see if they are smarter. I wouldn't expect such intelligence from a plugin player or Firefox's native player. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I use VLC to watch videos. It doesn't prevent the screen savers/energy savers from blanking the screen. I switched off energy saving/screen saver wherever I found the option, finally used the xset -dpms. I'd really like to have my screens saving energy when I leave them for some minutes, but I don't want to switch manually, because I forget it. So, if anyone has the magic trick to have energy saving enabled, but automagically paused when using a video application, that would be really great! Not so Daniel. I use vlc exclusively for TV/DVD viewing. Go to Tools>Preferences>All [at bottom]>Video and Disable screensaver.

A part works, at least the part that is important to me: VLC indeed prevents "energy saving", but it does not prevent "screen saver" as the setting says. That's ok for me, because I want to turn off the screen when unused, but have it running when watching a movie... Did the following tests ("Disable screensaver" checked in VLC): KDE system settings-> Hardware -> display and monitor ("Anzeige und Monitor") -> Screen lock ("Bildschirmsperre") -> automatic start after 1 Minute, simple lock. Started VLC with a video - but after a minute the screen lock applied and VLC did not prevent it. Same with applying a screen saver. But then (unsetting the above): KDE system settings-> Hardware -> energy management ("Energie-Verwaltung") -> save energy ("Energiesparen") -> monitor energy management ("Bildschirm-Energieverwaltung") -> 1 Minute. Started VLC and indeed the screens did not blank during 6 minutes, but 1 minute after I closed VLC. Hurray! I guess something has changed to the positive since I tried the last time quite a while ago... regards Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Barcelona professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com google+: https://plus.google.com/109534388657020287386 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The thing is, I don't want that to be permanent in my case - I want the screen to blank when I'm not in front of it. So I've also created a shell script that re-enables it and locks the screen for me (though I'd sure like it to be more intelligent than it is at present). This depends on what video application you use, and what desktop. For instance, xine may trick the system by emulating a key press every while. IIRC, it is blq.num toggle. Some desktops have a normal mode and a presentation mode. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
