[opensuse] Mount on demand with automounter
This is a question that is ultimately about the automounter. I have the automounter working with NFS. My laptop can access my home directory laptop:/home/anton/server symlinks to laptop:/mnt/server/anton which has a autofs NFS mount controlled by /etc/auto.mnt that points to server:/home/anton There are a few more things like that so I can access development and documents and CD/DVD images on the "server". That all works. What I'm trying for now is something 'local' and it doesn't seem to do what I expect. I created laptop:/etc/auto.master /home/anton /etc/auto.home-anton and in that had a line /Downloads -fstype=ext3 :/dev/vgmain/Downloads Starting the automounter produced a slew of error message and they were about all the other file systems I had mounted under /home/anton And that line didn't seem to work, though there were no error messages going on. I've googled some and all I find about "/home" is mounting it NFS from other machines. I understand that. I've done that in other contexts. That's not what I'm trying to do here. What am I missing? -- Dear Lord: Please make my words sweet and tender, for tomorrow I may have to eat them. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I created
laptop:/etc/auto.master /home/anton /etc/auto.home-anton
and in that had a line
/Downloads -fstype=ext3 :/dev/vgmain/Downloads
Starting the automounter produced a slew of error message and they were about all the other file systems I had mounted under /home/anton
Could you post some of the error messages, please? They might give us a hint. Have you tried "Downloads" instead of "/Downloads" ? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (25.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hi Anton, as far as I remember automount wants exclusive rights on the (top) directory, so your
laptop:/etc/auto.master /home/anton /etc/auto.home-anton
is going to produce some irritations at least. Could you try something like laptop:/etc/auto.master /home/anton/Stuff /etc/auto.home-anton (create ~anton/Stuff, keep it empty) which has Downloads -fstype=ext3 :/dev/vgmain/Downloads in it? IMHO, that *should* work (i.e., accessing ~anton/Stuff/Downloads should mount it) Cheers, Pit -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That is true. And when its finished it removes everything. EVERYTHING! Glad I had a backup!

I did something close. All my NFS mounts are somewhere under /mnt/<hostname>/... e.g /mnt/server/cdimages /mnt/server/movies So I set up /mnt/local/ and it has /mnt/local/Downloads and ~anton/Download symlinks there. -- My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.
