what's up with the gnumeric source rpm?
Trying to recompile it I get this error: checking for gnome-config... (cached) /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-config Unknown library `xml' checking for xmlNewDoc in -lxml... Unknown library `xml' no configure: error: Could not link sample xml program The binaries of gnumeric-1.0.9 crash when you try and open an Excel document.

OK, -lxml means that gcc is trying to use the linker to load (-l) the xml library (xml) in order to use functions defined within it. The file it is looking for can be determined by stripping the -l off the front, and replacing it with lib and adding .so on the end (.so = Shared Object) So, we're looking for a file called libxml.so locate libxml.so returns the following: /usr/lib/libxml.so /usr/lib/libxml.so.1 /usr/lib/libxml.so.1.8.17 It's the top one we're interested in. users/ogley> rpm -qf /usr/lib/libxml.so libxml-devel-1.8.17-86 You're missing the libxml-devel package. Many thanks. Knowing that will definitely come in handy in the future. On Sun, 2002-11-24 at 14:29, James Ogley wrote:

Well I've made a lot of progress but still an error with oaf: checking for Bonobo >= 1.0.9 ... <yes > found bonobo-1.0.20 checking for oaf-config... /opt/gnome/bin/oaf-config checking for OAF - version >= 0.6.2... no *** Could not run OAF test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means OAF was incorrectly installed *** or that you have moved OAF since it was installed. In the latter case, you *** may want to edit the oaf-config script: /opt/gnome/bin/oaf-config configure: error: OAF not found or too old There are only 2 rpms for oaf on Suse 8.1 right? Is there something else? On Sun, 2002-11-24 at 20:19, Rob Benton wrote:
