Is it possible to start an xterm with a parameter on the command line producing the same effect as the menu selection "VT Fonts: Huge"? If this is on the maual, I haven't found it, I got lost somewhere O:-) And if there is another to give a certain size and possition, better still ;-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

The Xresources xterm*Geometry: and xterm*font: or the corresponding command line options if your don't want to mess with Xresources. -- -ckm

Xresources wouldn't work, as I need different xterms of different sizes. As for the command line, that is what I'm looking for, and not finding O:-) It could be a -f?? something, but it seems to be expecting a font name, and I only want to specify that the size I want is Huge. There is a "-fs size", but it wants size in points for truetype fonts... and it doesn't work, "xterm -fs 24" does nothing different than "xterm -fs 12" As for geometry, it seems to be: -geometry geometry This option specifies the preferred size and posi tion of the VT102 window; see X(7). and sends me to "man X", where I get lost again... Ah! found it: "-geometry WIDTHxHEIGHT+XOFF+YOFF", where width and height are in chars. And that one works. Well, something solved. I still need the standard font size set to huge, normal, unreadable, etc... -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

You are going to have to specify the font using the -fn option. The
"Huge" font is normally the font 10x20. The follwing command will list
the "VT fonts" on your system.
xlsfonts | grep ^[1-9].*
You will have to play with it until you get the right one. Another
example is the "Large" font is 9x15.

'xterm -geo 70x50 -fn 9x15' will start with a 70x50 window, an unspecified location, and the 9x15 fixed font. Check /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias for what's available as far as fonts go (you can make your own aliases like 'HUGE' too). You can define multiple Xresources for a given client as well by hard linking xterm to small_xterm and then setting resources like small_xterm*whatever: -- -ckm

How about installing the sgi fonts from the SuSE cd which are very nice then you could just do this. Make a new icon on desktop called xterm-lg and put this in the excution part of the KDE shortcut. xterm -fn screen18 You can set the background / forground in this line as well. My term shortcut on my panel has this in it for just everyday terms.. wterm -bg black -fg white -fn screen16 -geometry 83x51+95-81 Hope that helps some. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail and any attachment is intended for anyone with an email address and does not contain information that is confidential and privileged or that is of any intrinsic value to anyone.

Ah! I have that one locally: /usr/share/doc/howto/en/html/Bash-Prompt-HOWTO/x610.html But that is not what I'm looking for: I do not want to select a different font name. Ok, I'll try to explain myself better :-) If I press [Ctrl][right mouse button] inside an xterm, I see a little menu, "VT Fonts", where I have a choice of 7 fonts sizes, from "Unreadable" to "Huge". I just want access to that from the command line...

Ok, I'll have a look there, thanks. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I asked that question a few months ago. The answer is what Christopher Mahmood said. Here's the closet I've come to getting mc started with "HUGE" from my .fvwm2rc + "mc-big" Exec xterm -fn 10x20 -ls -geometry 90x20 -e mc -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
Bonjour; Look for "SimpleMenu" or "fontMenu" in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm. But it will change the menu from Xdefaults, not from the command line. Olivier LICHTENBERGER Carlos E. R. wrote:

Well, thank you all (Paul, Ben, Christopher, zentara, Patrick and Olivier - to this moment) for your answers, that was what I was looking for. The geometry thing I had found, but the font size no, and it wouldn't have ever occurred to me, so, thanks :-) Not I have my commands for huge and large as: xterm -fn 10x20 -ls -geometry 85x30+400+390 & xterm -fn 9x15 -ls -geometry 90x40+0+390 & Now I only have to find where to tell gnome to execute them at start ;-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

You can use your .xinitrc for this. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail and any attachment is intended for anyone with an email address and does not contain information that is confidential and privileged or that is of any intrinsic value to anyone.
