You should have no problem as VMW will pick up your existing drivers for printer and mouse, or you can add them in with the configuration editor of VMW. What I meant was VMW natively will not support USB by itself, but you can use LPT1 device to put in /dev/lp0 and for the mouse, I just use autodetect in VMW config editor. It has always worked, even with my usb.

I have the full workstation, but purchased it long ago when it was still cheap. My wife uses it for Word, and SPSS .. although I am slowly transitioning her over to Linux .. now that SPSS is available for linux. I was thinking about putting freeBSD in there too. One thing I forgot to mention - one of the big differences between WMVare and Win4Lin, VMW will allow you to actually cut and paste between linux and the guest OS, and vice versa, where Win4Lin will not. pretty neat. ... if you have enough memory allocated to VMW, it runs just about native speed with any app. I set up 196 MB for it, as I have 640 on board total. j -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Bills travel through the mail at twice the speed of checks

Lucky guy! I could kick myself for not purchasing it back when it was cheap. Now I'm wondering if the Express is worth the money. They have dropped the price on it down to $49.95 USD, but now I'm wondering if that's not just a tactic to get rid of what they have in stock before they release a new version?

Well, even if they release a new version, as long as you have your key, you can just upgrade/install the newer version. I have done this several times over the past couple of years. For what its worth, wife or I have never had a crash with windows running in VMW, never a BSOD. I think they dropped the price in order to get better market penetration against Win4Lin in the W9x market. -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done.

Interesting ... with VMWare I can cut & paste from Linux to Win98
easily enough (do the usual block-mark thing in X with the mouse
cursor, go back to Win98 and do Edit/Paste in your application),
but I've not managed to get it working the other way (e.g. block
the text in Word, do Edit/Copy, go out to Linux, click any mouse
buttons you like and nothing happens).
What's the trick?
With thanks,
Ted.

Thanks, Gary!
It wasn't quite straightforward though. What you say is basically
what I'd been trying; then I did exactly what you said and it
still didn't seem to work (clicking on the taskbar label to
bring up the xterm I wanted to paste into, which was "behind"
the VMWare window on the same desktop).
However, I'm using KDE and this has peculiarities ...
So I tried again, since I trust you :). What I found was that if I
a) had the Linux "copy-to" xterm in a different desktop (say #2)
from the desktop (say #1) which had the VMware window with Win98
b) highlighted and did "copy" in Word
c) ** moved the cursor off the WMWare window in desktop #1, and
used Ctrl-TAB to get to desktop #2,
OR
d) ** clicked on "2" desktop button to get to desktop #2,
bringing the xterm there into "focus"
e) and THEN pressed the middle button to paste, then it worked.
I think the key is that clicking around on windows in the desktop
containing VMWare somehow confuses the system.
OK, so now I know. Thanks, and Cheers.
Ted.

Ted, by any chance are you using VMW in full window mode. The reason why I ask, is that I do not use it in that mode, and I have had no problems with pasting into the same desktop. It seems to paste into any application that I choose, VIM, Xemacs, xterm, Eterm, Wordperfect, gedit etc., I just use Alt+Tab to focus on what I want to paste into. And an interesting one. But no. Though I installed VMWare tools, what
I've been doing (on a 1024x768 TFT monitor) is to give it 1280x1024
virtual resolution in X (which matches the real screen resolution on the
larger monitor of another, networked machine), and also change the Windows
Display settings to 1024x768. That way I get a screen-full of Windows, but
also have a "virtual margin" which I can slide into with the mouse to
access the KDE panel etc., and other root-window thingies, and can
basically work in the same space on both machines. However, this seems to
have had the effect of
a) denying DGA access for the display in VMWare
b) making "full-screen" mode unavailable.
On starting-up VMWare I get a pop-up message: "No DGA modes found.
XFree86 direct graphics (DGA extension) initialisation failed".
Then later, "powering-on" the VM, I get the message: "The virtual machine
will not be able to run in full-screen SVGA mode, because your X server
does not support the XFree86 DGA extension for direct-to-frame-buffer
graphics, or because DGA is supported but the virtual machine cannot
use it."
It's the use of the larger virtual screen which does it: if I disable
"Virtual" in XF86Config (so that Virtual = Real = 1024x768), I get DGA and
can do full-screen in VMWare. But in general I prefer the other, for the
reasons stated.
However, it may be this which is causing the little complications with
cut-&-paste!
Nevertheless, I'll keep trying variants of finger-work along your lines
-- you never know!
All the best,
Ted.
PS. I just checked both ways (with & without Virtual). The upshot is that
you can use Alt-TAB and cut&paste will work, but of course you can't be
in full screen mode because you HAVE to get the mouse off the Windows
"screen" before Alt-TAB will switch between X windows (otherwise it
switches between Windows windows), and you can't do that if Windows is
full-screen!
However, with no Virtual, you can "block & Ctl-C" in full-screen Windows,
Ctrl-Alt-Esc to get out of full-screen, slide your mouse out and Alt-Tab
to get your copy-in X window, and then press the middle button and it
works. Then back to full-screen.
On the other hand, with Virtual, you just need to slide the mouse out
to the margin, then Alt-TAB (though I have had intermittent failures
in this mode, with nothing getting pasted, which seems to have something
to do with the copy-in X window overlapping the Windows window -- which
may be why it worked OK with the X window on desktop #2).
Hmm. Interesting indeed.
