[opensuse] Securely delete wipe shred files
Hi, i am looking for a GUI way to securely delete directories and files recursively. I searched the repositories for wipe shred and delete. On CLI, how can i use wipe to erase /drive/sampledir ? Kind regards Philippe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You should be able to add an entry to the context menu of the your file manager of choice with the program mentioned below.

,---- | man shred `---- However, note that shredding is not really possible on journaling file systems. The exception is ext3 as long as you did not change it to use data=journal (data=ordered (default mode) and data=writeback works fine). For whole directories, it is easy to write a script. Charles

Unfortunately the man page for wipe is not very useful but wipe -h does give a little more detail.... be warned wipe can be very slow.... - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. In KDE 3 you can use KGPG to install a 'shredder' on the desktop that overwrites several times any file you drop on it. Run KGPG, open its configure dialog, go to the 'Misc' page and 'Install shredder on desktop'. Caveats apply about the efficacy of shredding files at all, but KGPG points this out to you.
