Re: [SLE] "mms is not a registered protocol"
try this:
new string: network.protocol-handler.app.mms
value: /usr/local/bin/gmplayer (of course you can try
opt/kde3/bin/kaffeine also. i do not have kaffeine on my Suse 9.1. i
prefer gmplayer)
new boolean: network.protocol-handler.external.mms
value: true
i tried this on a whim and it works for the site videos you provided
but i do receive this error and i dont know what it means:
Couldn't resolve name for AF_INET6: www.name-of-domain.com (could be a
mplayer error)
but it plays the videos

Hi, everyone. Last fall I wrote to the list asking for help with an error message I was getting when trying to watch videos on the following site: http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/sights/
The message was: "mms not supported protocol."
At the time I was using Mozilla 1.6 and SuSE 9.1, and some of you supplied the following solution:
1) open Mozilla, type about:config and click enter 2) right click on the screen and choose new/string from the menu that appears 3) enter preference: network.protocol-handler.apps.mms 4) in the next screen enter path to Kaffeine: opt/kde3/bin/kaffeine.
That worked great.
However, I just did a clean install of 9.2, did the on-line update using YaST, and I am using Firefox 1.0.
I am getting another error message now that reads: "mms is not a registered protocol." I tried the Mozilla solution shown above but it isn't working. I'm still getting the error message.
Any ideas?
Would appreciate guidance on getting Firefox to play the videos on this site.
Thx Gil

Hi, Ganesh. Thanks for reply. I made both the changes you suggest above, but I'm still getting the same error message ("mms is not a registered protocol"). I do not get the error message you described. Should I leave my about:config set with the 2 changes you suggested or should I return them to default settings? Thx Gil

Hi All,
This may be a stupid question, but are you all running the identical version of Firefox?... same package, same packager and installed in the same way?
rpm -qa | grep Firefox shows MozillaFirefox-1.0-2.1

Carl, I am using Firefox 1.0 Interestingly, when I enter rpm -qa | grep Firefox and hit enter nothing happens. I am brought back to a command prompt. Same thing if I try egrep or fgrep. Grep does appear to be installed. I typed locate grep and it found /usr/bin/ (a whole bunch of greps) Gil

When doing search of this sort, I recommend doing a case-insensitive grep: % rpm -qa |egrep -i firefox If that does not turn anything up, then either your RPM database is messed up or you did not install Firefox via RPM (nor did I).
Grep does appear to be installed. I typed locate grep and it found /usr/bin/ (a whole bunch of greps)
It would be an odd installation of Linux that did not include the usual complement of greps (grep, egrep and fgrep, all of which are the same program with different default options based on their name).

OK, I tried the case-insensitive command and got "command not found." Also tried it with a space between the pipe ( | ) and egrep. Same thing. Note: this firefox was installed into my home directory via rpm. It is not the firefox from the SuSE DVD. Sorry if I mis-stated that previously or did not say anything about that. Gil

Just wondering if the person who started this thread got this problem fixed. I tried it on two different machines Suse 9.1 and FC 3 with Firefox 1.0 and Firefox 1.0PR and it works well on both machines (except for the AF_INET6 error). Ganesh
I was wondering if anyone on this list could forward me urls, howtos, kb articles on how I can upgrade my Suse 9.1 personal to Suse 9.2 using FTP edition. I have not played with this yet except to google for answers but to no avail. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Thanks Ganesh

Gil,
I didn't catch this thread from the very beginning and not all of my questions have been answered. Would you mind bringing me up to speed directly?
- - SuSE version? - - MozillaFirefox version? - - Where did you get the package? - - How did you install it? - - What multimedia players & plug-ins do you have installed? - - What versions? - - Where did you get them? - - How installed?
SuSE version 9.2 pro -- clean install (wiped drive first) Firefox version 1.0 Package came from firefox website Installed into home directory from an installer executable Kaffeine is installed and plays certain formats -- for example .mpgs. However, other video formats won't play using Kaffeine as I don't have all the proper codecs installed. For example, .avi files will play the audio only, but no video. And .mov and .wmv files will not play at all. Kaffeine opens but I am apparently missing some necessary plug-ins. Kaffeine version is 0.4.3b Kaffeine was installed from the SuSE DVD
As I posted earlier, my version of SuSE's MozillaFirefox jumped from 1.0-2.1 to 1.0-6.1 yesterday due to some security patches. The directory I downloaded the rpm from is:
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/update/9.2/rpm/i586/
The full package rpm name is: MozillaFirefox-1.0-6.1.i586.rpm
I'm thinking that you might have better luck just removing the version that isn't working, downloading the one I used from SuSE that /works/ and installing it with YaST.
This sounds as if it might be a very good idea. I will try this and report the results. I will also try to get all of the codecs from pacman. I used to be able to do all of this very easily when I had SuSE 9.1 and Red Carpet. But I have not yet found the secret to getting Red Carpet to work using 9.2. Thanks for your help. Gil
I know I'll get flamed for this but ...
