Need some advice on how to create/convert doc to PDF under Linux. I tried the Staroffice PDF writer (more like a printer) but it's not working at all? I saw the te-pdf and something not too sure about the name of the package, but need help on how to use them in a least painful way. I need to get this work or some of my Liunx box may convert to win9x box to run Acrobat writer. :( Help please, thanks. Dennis/sg

Print to file using a postscript driver. Then use ps2pdf to convert the postscript file to pdf. tosi@dustpuppy:~ > ll example* - -rw-r--r-- 1 tosi starf 29 Apr 25 2000 example.conf - -rw-r--r-- 1 tosi starf 14148 Jún 12 2000 example.ps tosi@dustpuppy:~ > ps2pdf example.ps tosi@dustpuppy:~ > ll example* - -rw-r--r-- 1 tosi starf 29 Apr 25 2000 example.conf - -rw-r--r-- 1 tosi users 1504 Feb 27 18:12 example.pdf - -rw-r--r-- 1 tosi starf 14148 Jún 12 2000 example.ps tosi@dustpuppy:~ > file example.pdf example.pdf: PDF document, version 1.2 tosi@dustpuppy:~ > rpm -qf `which ps2pdf` gs_lib-5.50-141 tosi@dustpuppy:~ > uname -a Linux dustpuppy 2.2.18 #1 Wed Jan 24 12:28:55 GMT 2001 i686 unknown tosi@dustpuppy:~ >cat /etc/SuSE-release SuSE Linux 7.1 (i386) VERSION = 7.1 tosi@dustpuppy:~ > - -tosi -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.4 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE6m+5c6mRH+PEpr2YRAjY3AJwPJNOrAPT36lCv83XeWquq8UFTegCgjY5E 2J/Iz7oJVeOU8m+d1pVkGJM= =XGaL -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
Do as Tosi says, using ps2pdf, or better yet learn TeX/LaTeX -- the
easy way in the door is LyX, a GUI frontend to LaTeX that makes it
easy to start. From the File menu in LyX you can export to PostScript
and then run ps2pdf, or you can export to LaTeX and then using the
.tex files you have two options. First option: latex
Wow, it really look complicated.. :( Anyway, will try out your steps and hope to see some result. Thanks for your help. Dennis/sg
Do as Tosi says, using ps2pdf, or better yet learn TeX/LaTeX -- the easy way in the door is LyX, a GUI frontend to LaTeX that makes it easy to start. From the File menu in LyX you can export to PostScript and then run ps2pdf, or you can export to LaTeX and then using the .tex files you have two options. First option: latex
; dvips -Ppdf ; ps2pdf . Second option (much easier): pdflatex . This works best if you use a PostScript font, properly installed. You will get very high quality pdf output. If you don't use a properly installed PS font, you will get output rasterized at 600 dpi. Learning LaTeX properly is worth the trouble because it produces *better looking* documents than any word processor I have seen, once you get rid of the hideous extended bold headings. Like I said, the easy way in the door is LyX. You can export from LyX to a LaTeX file and inspect it to see the basics of LaTeX markup. However, LyX produces ugly LaTeX, so you'll want to get some books real soon. BTW, for your immediate needs, perhaps this is useful -- Adobe has an online Acrobat Distiller service. It costs, but you can do a few for free.

I didn't know there was a Star Office PDF writer. :-) But I do it by printing from *whatever* application to Postscript and then using the ps2pdf tool. Some applications have better support, eg: lyx2pdf, pdflatex etc, from LyX/LaTeX sources. -- Rachel
