Re: [SLE] Kernel RPMs for multiprocessor environment

No, k_smp kernels are designed for SMP machines and work OK (at least in my case).
Should I compile the kernel after changing some parameters in config?
Definitely not. The problem is probably not in the kernel but somewhere else.
I just got an error when I upgraded my Suse 7.1 kernel from 2.4.0 to 2.4.7. This is the latest downloadable version for Suse 7.1 on ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.1/kernel/2.4.7.
Go for k_smp-2.4.16-*.rpm and don't forget to upgrade other packages in the directory (modutils!), too. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.1/kernel/2.4.16-20011220 Note that you should run mk_initrd and lilo after the upgrade! The information you provide is not sufficient. Try the upgrade to 2.4.16. If it fails then information about: /etc/lilo.conf: image = /boot/vmlinuz label = linux root = /dev/hda3 initrd = /boot/initrd append = "hdc=ide-scsi" /etc/rc.config: INITRD_MODULES="aic7xxx usbcore" is useful to diagnose the problem (the examples are from my SMP machine, your configuration will be different). Also read about initrd in the reference book. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
Don't forget that they also have k_psmp which is the SMP kernel for older Pentia, i.e. classic and MMX. I think the k_smp kernel is for Pentium Pro and above. My dual P233MMX machine uses k_psmp, while my dual PII-233 box uses k_smp. Bye for now, Stuart. <snip> No, k_smp kernels are designed for SMP machines and work OK (at least in my case). </snip>
