[opensuse] can't start xfce
Hi everyone 12.1 updated today. I just installed xfce using the yast pattern. Choosing xfce session at the kdm login screen takes me to kde. I optimistically added: /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/sessions/xfce4.desktop [Desktop Entry] X-SuSE-translate=true Encoding=UTF-8 Type=XSession Exec=/usr/bin/startxfce4 TryExec=/usr/bin/startxfce4 Name=KDE Plasma Workspace Comment=xfce Still nothing. How do I start xfce? Thanks L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I used to switch frequently between KDE and GNOME and did so reliably using the /etc/sysconfig Editor in YAST. There are two settings there under the 'Desktop' section, "Display Manager" and "Window Manager" and IIRC it was only necessary to change both if you wanted to keep the greeter appearance consistent with the desktop; IOW one is 'window dressing' affecting the greeter, the other actually switches desktops. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Carl Thanks. I've tried what you suggest but still can only get kde despite changing the default to xfce and choosing default at the kdm login screen. There is one small change: kde appears but Yast has its GTK appearance. Logging in at a console in runlevel 3 then startxfce4 tells me that it can't change the X11 log under /var/log (startxfce4 is running as me, not root) Any ideas anyone? Okay, I Googled and found a reference stating the setting is DEFAULT_WM="startxfce4" Is that the setting you tried? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No. That setting is not on the pull down list. I chose xfce. But no good. L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Either just install the package "xfce-utils" or put the file in "/usr/share/xsessions". Charles -- "sic transit discus mundi" (From the System Administrator's Guide, by Lars Wirzenius)

Hi The file xfce4.desktop was already in /usr/share/xsessions The package "xfce-utils" does not seem to be available either from the opensuse oss nor the opensuse-xfce repos. There must be something easy being overlooked by me here! L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
I had a .xinitrc file. Renamed it and was able to log into xfce Sorry to have troubled and thanks for your time. L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hum, they must have repackaged for 12.1. Strange, what happens if you put: ,---- | exec startxfce4 `---- in "~/.xsession" (make sure the file is executable) and run "startx" after doing a: ,---- | rckdm stop `---- ? Charles -- "Problem solving under linux has never been the circus that it is under AIX." (By Pete Ehlke in comp.unix.aix)
