I have a ThinkPad without a driver for its network card. Obviously, I can't just download the driver directly to the ThinkPad. I can download the driver to a different system that's running linux, but it's a little more than 7MB in size, and won't fit on one floppy. Q: What utility can I use to copy the driver file to multiple floppies, and still be able to reconstitute the driver file on the Windows machine?
Now I'm curious too, because I know that zip is on the system, and the man page says it's compatible with pkzip, but I don't see the && option listed, which, in DOS, does just what the original poster wants. OTOH, I'm not sure _anyone_ has permission to write to a floppy in 9.1 ;-) --doug On Thursday 29 July 2004 14:50, Steve Adams wrote:

The option to split zip archives at a fixed exact point is missing in info-zip (which is the version of zip included in Linux). It is possible, though, to break them at file boundaries: meaning, of course, it can not split a single file larger than the requested size. Very unfortunate :-( On another note... I'm nicely surprised as to the number of people knowing how to concatenate files in dos (I had to use the trick last month). I wonder how many "windows" people know it :-p (I became to love linux at first because its console had what I had always wanted in ms-dos, and knew I would never have. I guess I'm not the only one)
OTOH, I'm not sure _anyone_ has permission to write to a floppy in 9.1 ;-)

If anyone is interested I can post (or sent as personal email) two programs I was give about 10 years ago called bsplit and bmerge. I used them to split large tar files into floppy size files and then reassemble into the original tar. Output from the bsplit command line is: Usage: bsplit [infile] [chunksize] [outbase] chunksize in bytes, kbytes, or mbytes (n/a, k|K, m|M) (set chunksize = H for High Density Floppy size) writes <outbase>.000, <outbase>.001... Patrick, unfortunately cat is not available in alternative OS unless it has cygwin installed. And the question was how to concatenate files in alternative OS. The workaround is type, I sent it in another post. Regards, -Kastus

You are correct. I should pay more attention. copy /b file1+file2+file3 full.fil should work if I remember dos.... -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
(I'm posting before reading all the other answers, so if someone has already sent the same basic info, I do apologize for using the BW.) This may work. I will quote from "The Complete Guide to MS-DOS 5.0 from Hauppauge!" Quote on: COPY _source dest /switches_ ---some text relating to text files removed-- /B indicates a binary file. If this switch is placed before _dest_ DOS will copy everything, including [ctrl]Z characters. End quote. This indicates that without the /b, [ctrl]Z might terminate either the file or the copying procedure, none of which is what you want. I think if I were going to try it, I would write as follows: copy file1+file2 +file3 /b file 123.xyz At any rate, one of these should definitely work, assuming the file is in a DOS-readable format. Remember DOS (and Win 95/98) are not case sensitive, so the /B or /b will either one work fine. Not sure about what you might have on a handheld, but if it's Windows, it should at least be DOS-compatible. --doug On Thursday 29 July 2004 16:19, Patrick Shanahan wrote:

I vaguely remember another trick: copy -b src1+src2+src3+...+srcn target -- NEU: WLAN-Router fr 0,- EUR* - auch fr DSL-Wechsler! GMX DSL = supergnstig & kabellos http://www.gmx.net/de/go/dsl

Well, it goes beyond the scope of this list, but here is what you can try. Say, after split you have files xaa xab xac. Then, in alternative OS, use the following commands in command window: type xaa > xfull type xab >> xfull type xac >> xfull After that, xfull should be your original file. Regards, -Kastus

Something like 'copy /b splitfileaa+splitfileab+splitfileac completefile' should work. Michael

Something like .. copy /b xaa + xab + xac + xad driver.exe where xaa .. xad are the chunks of the original file and driver.exe is the name of the joined together file. It's been years sine I used DOS, so you might want to open up a DOS box and check the help for copy ;-)

as was reported earlier in this thread, cat for linux which is also included in coreutils, and copy for dos. For windoz you will have to google, which would also have worked in the other two answers. http://learn.to/quote (German and English) -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
