[SLE] How to run M$ Office applications on Linux box over network?
Hello Linux folks! I have to use some M$ Office applications for my job. I know that I can run them under Linux using emulators like vine or vmware. But for this task I must create FAT32 partition and install Winblows with all needed M$ applications on my Linux server HD. I don't want to do that. Is there any possibility tor run Winblows applications installed on pure Winblows box under Linux over network. Kind of idea of Winblows application server. Any your help or suggestions are gladly appreciated. Thanks. I know of one way to do that: install Windows NT Terminal Server or Citrix. That's an application server (AS) to which you can connect and work on. I don't know if there's a client for Linux/UNIX, I do know it's not the same principle as X Windows. Good luck Rogier Alexander Daniloff wrote:

Citrix has clients for Linux alright, but not all the features work that are built into the MS clients. Why not use VNC as it works just fine ? See http://www.suse.de/en/produkte/susesoft/linux/Pakete/paket_vnc.html Or try the commercial package VMWARE, see http://www.suse.de/en/produkte/susesoft/linux/Pakete/paket_vmware.html Best Regards, Dee W.D.McKinney (Dee) deem@wdm.com "No claim to fame, just saved by Grace." -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

VNC will do this. I know it allows you to run Linux apps on a Windows box, but I think it works the other way as well. At least I seem to recall hearing about it doing that at some point. The vnc entry in the RPM db here says it will as well.. ---------%----------- Name : vnc Distribution: SuSE Linux 6.1 (i386) Version : 3.3.2 Vendor: SuSE GmbH, Nuernberg, GeRelease : 35 Build Date: Wed Apr 14 22:12:43 1999Install date: Thu Jun 3 06:36:06 1999 Build Host: Einstein.suse.de Group : unsorted Source RPM: vnc-3.3.2-35.src.rpm Size : 2905275 License: GPL Packager : feedback@suse.de Summary : A virtual X-Server Description : With vnc you can start a virtual X-Server and get access to it from different machines with the vnc-viewer. You can change the machine without terminating your session. Viewer and server are also available for Windows - they allow access to vnc under windows. You can find it under /dosutils/vnc on the first CD. ---------%----------- There might only be a NT server though, now that I think about it. Anyway, check out that first CD. (I'm using SuSE 6.1 BTW.) You might want to check out the VNC homepage too. Like some of the others have said, VNC will do this. Here's the "gotchas" based on my experience of using VNC with Windows 95 as the server, and Linux as the viewer: - colors can get to be weird and sometimes are not displayed at all. - complex patterns (like wall paper) bog down the display refresh. This is due to the way VNC sends the screen to the viewer. Plain backgrounds transmit faster. - You really need a fast Windows computer (faster than normally expected for Windows). I tried it on a 386 w/ 32MB RAM. Windows performed acceptably, but it was unbearable under VNC. A Pentium 90 is OK. A Pentium 233 is great. - Screen refreshes or large screen changes (like minimizing or maximizing an application) can eat up quite a bit of network bandwidth. -- George Toft http://www.georgetoft.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

For VMWARE this it is not necessary, Even the filesystem is 'virtual' and just a file on your ext2 partition. Seems this works even better and faster.
