This is a very wide spec but anyway you need to install JDK from your 7.2 CD's.
As an IDE, you may want to check out Sun's Forte. It's freely available for download.
You probably need a database. MySQL or Postgres has necessary jdbc drivers.
From what you say C/S, I deduce that you may also need a sort of App server. There
are lots of available commercially for Linux such as IBM Websphere, BEA Weblogic, however
you may check out Enhydra (www.enhydra.org), Jonas (I don't recall the URL), or some other
kind of an app server with Java bindings (such as Zope).  It's also possible that you'll need a
servlet runner. Install Jakarta from your CDs our download it. jakarta.apache.org.

Hope this gives you a starting point at least.

Regards,
Oyku

It depends on what type of development will you make, and also depends on your usage of your Linux box. Will it be your "a sort of server" or will it be your workstation ? Anyhow You'll basically need to have JDK and/or JRE installed. Both reside in your 7.2 CDs.

I must develop a client-server chat architecture in java...
i never used java under linux, so that i am looking for the basic infos... any help would be really appreciated!!!
