if you look to translation trunk toplist you realize that there are different number in the Total column. Eg. Czech translations have only 33281 strings, while Japanese translations has 33309. What causes the difference?

Automatically no.

If I'm translating a file and there is an automatic update, then there is a conflict when I want to upload the .po file I have with the .po file in the server.

Just use msgmerge tool to update your translated PO file from updated PO file (or from POT). Guillaume

At least those teams that use Vertaal do not need automatic updates, we can handle them with vertaal when and as needed without conflicts.
