[opensuse-translation] New Tajik Language for OpenSUSE
To Whom It May Concern, My name is Victor Ibragimov, a lead translator and coordinator for Tajik KDE Team. I live in Dushanbe, Tajikistan (North from Afghanistan and West from China). For the past five years I have been involved in Software Localization projects for Tajik Language and initially have localized Mandriva/Mandrake Linux and KDE into Tajik. It would be real nice to get OpenSUSE speak Tajik! Tajik Language does not yet exist in OpenSUSE, so I would like to be a coordinator of Tajik language and become an asset for OpenSUSE Localization Project. My wiki user page is created at http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/User:Tajiksuse In addition I have added OpenSUSE project information page at http://www.kde.tj/index.php/Main/OpenSUSE and will keep both pages updated as we progress on Tajik translations. Also look forward to set up a Translation Team page for Tajik and get to work on translation as soon as possible! New Language Info: * Language name: Tajik * Language code: tg * Novell login: Tajiksuse * Full name: Victor Ibragimov * Contact mail: victor.ibragimov@gmail.com Hope to spend more of my volunteer time working on OpenSUSE Localization activities. Have a great day! Hi Victor, nice that you want to participate in translating openSUSE*. I welcome you because the actually responsible person (Karl Eichwalder) is currently not in office and won't over the next week IIRC. As you've maybe noticed we've already started our work for 11.2 - regarding the roadmap we still have some time (finished localization at Mi, Sep 30). But since you'll have to start from scratch I guess every day is useful for you. Unfortunately the tg language isn't in our system yet, so Karl will have to create it (and also give you comit rights for SVN). If you still want to start right away I'd suggest you to use the generic pot files which can be found here (for this start please keep away from update-desktop-files and gnomepackagekit and I think openoffice - since those are at least partially merged from upstream of the respective projects): https://forgesvn1.novell.com/svn/suse-i18n/trunk/yast/50-pot/ https://forgesvn1.novell.com/svn/suse-i18n/trunk/lcn/50-pot/ You'll have to save those files locally until Karl grants you comit rights. If you still have questions just ask - I hope I mentioned everything important but as already said, it's not what I usually do (coordinate the German translation team :) ). Regards, Michael * openSUSE is actually spelled with a lower case o ;) -- Q: Why does Washington have the most lawyers per capita and New Jersey the most toxic waste dumps? A: God gave New Jersey first choice.
Hi Michael, Thank you for the welcome message! I have svned the generic pot files, so the translation is ongoing alreay. Look forward to hear from Karl Eichwalder concerning the creation of tg language in the system and commit rights. I will keep in a close touch if questions or issues arise along the openSUSE localization process in Tajik. Regards, Victor. Michael Skiba wrote:

Welcome Victor! what kind of fonts are needed for Tajik? For adding a new language, we should take care that fonts and input methods (if needed) are setup, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
Dear Andreas, Thanks for your welcome message! Tajik appears to be cyrillic (most of the time), so assuming Dejavu fonts will work reasonably well for the font coverage in openSUSE. Input methods would be if any SCIM/XIM input methods are involved. So, please see Tajik xkb description for the input method attached: Attch: Tajik-keyboard-xkb.txt There are also some Tajik translations ready for svn commit! Have a great day! Thanks for your commitment, Victor! You have now commit rights as Tajiksuse. I'd like to know which plural formular you want to use for the Tajik language--these formulars are in the PO file header and start with "Plural-Forms"; for example: "Plural-Forms: nplurals=2; plural=(n != 1);\n"

Thanks Michael for keeping new translators informed! In theory, everyone wiht commit rights can initialize a new language, though ;) For YaST files, the process is roughly documented in .../yast/50-doc/readme.txt but needs updating...

Dear Karl, Thank you so much! Both yast & lcn are available for download and commit. I have just made commit of some more translations and it worked fine. Thanks for your work! The next step is integration into the system. I'll build a yast languages package and then ask Jiri and Steffen for help.
If still in your competence, could you please also send me a quick hint or a link to start a team's page for 'Tajik' like http://tg.opensuse.org/Translation_Team and set up a mailing list like opensuse-tg@opensuse.org
In the past, it was Henne's playground. Hendrik, is this still the case and can help us?
